Melissa Etheridge calls her 15th studio album The Medicine Show because she's determined to shine a spotlight on healing – something she believes the culture could use in the year 2019. To that end, Etheridge dials back her emphasis on soul and returns to the roaring arena rock that made her name back in the '80s. That's appropriate. Etheridge designed these 11 songs to be anthems, painting even the quietest moments – such as the sadly delicate "Here Comes the Pain" – in broad strokes. These big gestures suit Etheridge's desire to tackle big issues, and the sweep of The Medicine Show does have its charms; in an era of narrowcasting, she throws her net wide, hoping to speak to a vast, diverse audience. Thing is, her music isn't as grand as her ambitions. The only time she breaks from her cavernous arena rock is on "This Human Chain," a deft and welcome bit of mellow disco-soul whose presence winds up underscoring how the rest of the album is bold but familiar; it's a record filled with good intentions but pitched squarely at the faithful converted.

On her fifteenth studio record, Melissa Etheridge presents her first original material since her 2014 album, This Is ME, following her critically acclaimed Stax tribute record, Memphis Rock and Soul. Produced by longtime collaborator John Shanks, The Medicine Show features some of her most honest songwriting to date, paired with beautiful instrumentation and her signature roaring guitar. Not only topically relevant in 2019, The Medicine Show further solidifies Etheridge’s in the current music scene and reminds us why Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades.

Although the Greatest Show on Earth (GSOE) were not the first bunch of rockers to incorporate a powerful brass and woodwind section, they are among the best and heaviest-sounding British bands to have emerged from the post-psychedelia of the late '60s and early '70s. GSOE were, in essence, the invention of EMI Records subsidiary Harvest, who were focusing in on new and progressive artists such as Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. When the group was initially signed in 1968, they were an R&B/soul revue whose forte was more along the lines of Stax or Motown, instead of trippy acid rock. After ditching their original vocalist, Ozzie Lane, they eventually settled on Colin Horton Jennings, a multi-faceted performer who would begin to compose originals that would allow the octet to incrementally abandon their Yankee soul leanings.

The Dramathon is one of the newest events in the racing calendar but is already hugely popular – attracting over 1,000 people. Competitors follow the iconic Speyside Way from Ballindalloch to Dufftown along forest tracks, riverside paths and through the hills. And it is called the Dramathon for a reason, because the route takes the competitors past nine of Scotland’s finest whisky distilleries. Also in this month’s Adventure Show we have two inspirational stories. We join former tattoo artist Steve Barnes, who has discovered that getting into our wild places helps him cope with a terminal illness.
