Most classical devotees know that Espana! features legendary Spanish conductor Ataulfo Argenta leading the London Symphony Orchestra in a program of so-called "Spanish" blockbusters. But, ironically, only one piece is penned by a Spanish composer (Granados, "Danza Espanola") while the others are by a Russian (Rimsky Korsakov, "Capriccio Espagnol"), German (Moszkowski, "5 Spanish Dances"), and Frenchman (Chabrier, "España"). The original LP version was initially issued in the United States as one of the index recordings of London Records' vaunted "blueback" series, known for its demonstration-quality sound.

For their latest album, Neeme Järvi and his Estonian National Symphony Orchestra present a delightful programme of lesser-known stage music from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Overtures by Thomas, Auber and Boieldieu were all composed for works staged at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, and are wonderful examples of the period.

Canadian composer Brian Current’s The Seven Heavenly Halls is the result of his being declared winner of the inaugural Azrieli Commission in September 2015. The work premiered on October 19, 2016 at the Maison symphonique by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal with tenor Frederic Antoun as soloist and Kent Nagano conducting.
