This release catches Johnny Otis just as he made the switch from big band jazz-styled pieces to the pivotal R&B-based sound that would carry him into the rock & roll years. Everything here is from his first year with Savoy Records, but unfortunately doesn't include his biggest hits from that year with the label ("Double Crossing Blues," "Mistrustin' Blues," "Cupid's Boogie"). While this is an extremely satisfying disc, those omissions (each went to number one on the R&B charts) make this a poor choice for a first glimpse at this versatile and innovative musician.

The Coasters were one of the few artists in rock history to successfully straddle the line between music and comedy. Their undeniably funny lyrics and on-stage antics might have suggested a simple troupe of clowns, but Coasters records were no mere novelties – their material, supplied by the legendary team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, was too witty, their arrangements too well-crafted, and the group itself too musically proficient. That engaging and infectious combination made them one of the most popular early R&B/rock & roll acts, as well as one of the most consistently entertaining doo wop/vocal groups of all time. The Coasters grew out of a successful Los Angeles doo wop group called the Robins, which had been recording since 1949 and working with Leiber & Stoller since 1953.

The early '50s was the heyday of pop performers whose style and image was ideally suited to the mood of the times and whose music epitomised the easy-going middle-of-the-road output of mainstream American radio stations in the years before rock 'n' roll arrived to change the face of popular music in mid-decade. Teresa Brewer was one such performer, a bright, stylish and versatile singer who was an ideal vehicle for just about kind of song her record companies wanted her to record, from ballads to out-and-out novelty songs, enabling her to rack up nearly fifty hits in her decade-long chart career, including the memorable No. 1 hits "Music! Music! Music!" and "Till I Waltz Again With You". This great-value 57-track 2-CD set comprises selected A & B sides of her singles during the era for the London and Coral labels, and naturally features her entries in the Billboard, Cash Box and UK charts from those years, including the hits "Ricochet", "Jilted", "Let Me Go, Lover", "A Tear Fell" and "A Sweet Old Fashioned Girl" and her duet hit with Don Cornell. It's a worthy showcase for an artist who provided many nostalgic memories for those who enjoyed her records during those years.

Universal's 2012 box set Ladies & Gentlemen…Mr. B.B. King is hardly the first B.B. King box set – MCA assembled a similar four-disc set called King of the Blues in 1992, Ace had a tremendous four-CD box called The Vintage Years in 2002 that covered his pre-ABC/Paramount recordings (apparently every ten years it's time for a new B.B. box) – but it certainly is the most ambitious, arriving in two separate career-spanning incarnations…

It's a matter of opinion as to whether Dixon's Aladdin output was his peak; many would give his Specialty sides (available on the Marshall Texas Is My Home compilation) the nod. Still, his late-'40s and early-'50s work for the label included some of his most popular and best tracks, such as "Wine, Wine, Wine," "Call Operator 210," "Tired, Broke and Busted," "Let's Dance," "Telephone Blues," and "Too Much Jelly Roll" (the last of which was one of Leiber-Stoller's first recorded compositions). This two-CD, 48-track compilation is geared more toward the completist collector than the average fan, especially with the inclusion of five Sonny Parker sides (which Dixon now says he didn't play on, despite some reports to the contrary) and about ten songs that feature Mari Jones on vocals…
