Iconic British soul and funk band, The Real Thing, will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2020 with the release of a brand-new Best Of album, featuring a never-before-released track, released on BMG on 10th January 2020. The release coincides with a brand-new documentary about the group, Everything – The Real Thing Story, by filmmaker Simon Sheridan which will be coming to cinemas in January 2020. Formed in 1970, The Real Thing’s incredible rise from the streets of Toxteth in Liverpool to the bright lights of New York is chronicled in this new album full of incredible hits, including ‘Can’t Get By Without You’, ‘You’ll Never Know What You’re Missing’, ‘Can You Feel The Force’, and of course the ubiquitous song that saw the band become the first all-black British group to hit #1 in the UK charts: ‘You to Me Are Everything’.

The songs of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson could occupy a whole Hall Of Fame to themselves. There can’t be any students of popular music who are not familiar with at least a few of their classics, be they their own hits like ‘Solid’ or those they wrote for Motown’s ‘A’ list artists, such as ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ and ‘Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing’ for Marvin & Tammi and ‘Reach Out And Touch (Somebody’s Hand)’ for Diana Ross.
These and many like them are as much a part of our lives as getting up in the morning. Less well known outside of connoisseur soul circles are the songs they wrote in the years immediately leading up to ‘Ain’t No Mountain’, with their original collaborator Joshie “Jo” Armstead. Between 1964 and 1967, the trio collaborated on a significant number of superior songs to provide hits for artists including Chuck Jackson and Maxine Brown, Betty Everett, Aretha Franklin and scores more.

The Real Thing is the third studio album by American rock band Faith No More, released on June 20, 1989 by Slash and Reprise Records. It was the first major release by the band not to feature vocalist Chuck Mosley. Instead, the album featured Mike Patton from the experimental/funk band Mr. Bungle. On this album, Faith No More continued to advance their sound range, combining thrash metal, funk, hip hop, progressive rock, synthpop, carousel music, and hard rock, along with what has been described as "a black sense of humor".

Backed by a small band in an modest setting (a Manhattan nightclub with 140 seats, one of which was occupied by Freddie Jackson, who joins in at one point), Ashford & Simpson roll through 14 of their best known songs, whether they were written for others or themselves. Since they throw in a couple crowd-pleasing curveballs, like opening with "It's Much Deeper" (a relatively low-charting single off 1983's High-Rise), it's not quite a greatest-hits set, but it's both rich and unpredictable enough to leave any follower satisfied.
