At the close of 1963, the Rolling Stones were, for want of a better word, on a – roll. They'd done okay if not great the previous summer with their debut single, a cover of a Chuck Berry obscurity called "Come On," which was more energetic than 99 percent of its competition, and then roared into the Top 20 in November with a follow up single, a savage rendition of the Lennon-McCartney song "I Wanna Be Your Man," complete with slide guitar and a bass that sounded like its amplifier was cranked up to 12.

It's often unfair to compare the Rolling Stones to the Beatles but in the case of the group's mono mixes, it's instructive. Until the 2009 release of the box set The Beatles in Mono, all of the Fab Four's mono mixes were out of print. That's not the case with the Rolling Stones. Most of their '60s albums – released on Decca in the U.K., London in the U.S. – found mono mixes sneaking onto either the finished sequencing or various singles compilations, so the 2016 box The Rolling Stones in Mono only contains 56 heretofore unavailable mono mixes among its 186 tracks…

They recorded it, toured behind it and then moved on creating Goats Head Soup, It's Only Rock 'n' Roll, Black and Blue and Some Girls without ever giving Exile a second thought. Fortunately for them, the rest of the world did. At eighteen songs, four sides and a battery of genres and styles embraced, it's not an easy album to love on first listen. A newcomer to the Stones isn't going to get it, neither will someone who doesn't understand country music, the blues or Chuck Berry. However, these eclectic torrent of influences all helped permeate and give birth to what many consider the greatest rock n' roll record ever. If we only ever had the music, which in itself would be enough, but the legacy behind Exile On Main Street is so much more.

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The first stable line-up consisted of bandleader Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica, keyboards), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Bill Wyman (bass), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ian Stewart (piano). Stewart was removed from the official line-up in 1963 but continued to work with the band as a contracted musician until his death in 1985…

A sequel of sorts to ABKCO’s three boxes of singles replicas from the mid-2000s, Universal’s The Singles: 1971-2006 is a gargantuan 45-disc box set that offers single replicas of every 45 the Rolling Stones released between Sticky Fingers and A Bigger Bang. Singles that saw release over multiple formats, whether they’re 12" dance singles or multi-format CD singles, see their various B-sides combined onto one CD, resulting in a whopping total of 173 tracks, 80 of which are “not currently available on official release.” This is a true statement but it greatly overestimates the actual number of genuine rarities here: most of these cuts are dubs, remixes, and extended versions, with only a small handful of B-sides being non-LP cuts…

The Rolling Stones Tour of Europe in 1982 was their first for six years and demand for tickets was huge. The two month tour began at Aberdeen’s Capital Theatre in late May and ended at the 700 acre Roundhay Park in Leeds, on 25 July. This is the show that you’re about to watch and listen to…
