After Mwandishi, his early 70s experimental sextet, met with critical and commercial indifference, Herbie Hancock turned his gaze to Sly and the Family Stone and James Brown. The result was Headhunters, a new and tighter fusion of jazz and funk. Great tunes, high-precision grooves and vein melting solos. This appearance captures Herbie, Bennie Maupin and Anthony Jackson in full flight just after the release of their debut album, replacement drummer Mike Clark fitting in perfectly. Its title might lead one to think this was a compilation, but it wasn't rather, More Hits by the Supremes is merely a valid presumption of its worth. It was also the original group's third highest charting album of their five years on Motown, and came not a moment too soon. The Supremes were doing incredibly well as a singles act, but not since Where Did Our Love Go had any of their LPs done particularly well on the pop charts; even a well-intentioned Sam Cooke-tribute album recorded early in 1965, which ought to have done better, had only reached number 75 (though it had gotten to number five on the R&B LP charts).

Like the Velvet Underground, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually nonexistent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the Scottish group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback that served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine to Dinosaur Jr. Though the supporting players drifted in and out of focus, the heart of the Mary Chain remained vocalists and guitarists William and Jim Reid, Scottish-born brothers heavily influenced not only by underground legends like the Velvets and the Stooges but also by the sonic grandeur and pop savvy of Phil Spector and Brian Wilson.
