Shigeko Toya was considered a rising star in jazz singing when she made this debut album for the Three Blind Mice label in 1972. Classically trained pianist, she had taken voice lessons and developed her unique, soulful style. Unfortunately for her fans, she made only albums before getting married and retiring completely.

“Harmony to please, varietie to delight, facilitie to invite thee…” In the preface of his collection of songs Pammelia, the excentric Thomas Ravenscroft praises the power of profane music, even more cheerful when sung among good friends! The Consort of Musicke, featuring notably Emma Kirkby and Paul Agnew, offers a nice florilegium of vocal pieces including the hits There Were Three Ravens and Three Country Dances in One.

Joji "George" Kawaguchi was a Japanese jazz drummer and bandleader. The Big Four had their debut concert in a large theater, Nichigeki in Yurakucho, Tokyo in May 1953. The Big Four was named the Number 1 combo in the 1954 by Swing Journal poll and created an all-time Jazz boom in Japan. George Kawaguchi was voted Number 1 drummer six years in a row. The Big Four played intermittently into the 1980s. George Kawaguchi played extensively with Art Blakey on tour in the 1980s. He also recorded extensively as a leader until his death in 2003.

From January to December 1974, pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and his trio performed daily in a jazz club called Misty that had a full-size New York Steinway concert grand. Producer of Three Blind Mice Takeshi Fujii heard him there, fell in love, and made his hugely successful debut album Midnight Sugar in the spring of the same year. Yamamoto had already recorded his second album Misty, and his year at Misty was winding down. For the third album to be recorded in a year, Fujii decided to capture the trio live in their "everyday setting."

Masaru Imada is a Japanese jazz pianist and composer. For his seventh record for the Three Blind Mice label, Imada decided to do an all standards album with his regular trio. Imada's piano style is straight forward and honest: He doesn't emply any gimmicks or pyrotechnics. Yet, his performance is very swinging and has a singing character. While firmly rooted in the American jazz piano tradition, his voicings and time-feel are uniquely his own.
Shoji Yokouchi Quartet - Blonde On The Rocks (1976) [Japan 2007] SACD ISO + DSD64 + Hi-Res FLAC

or FLAC (carefully converted & encoded to tracks) 24bit/96 kHz | Front/Rear Covers | 961 MB

Shoji Yokouchi was a skillful studio musician, composer and arranger who worked in pop and other genres of music, but at the core he was always a jazz guitarist. In this album, Yokouchi is paired with another guitarist, Toru Konishi, to form a piano-less, twin guitar quartet. In this collaborative and competitive setting, the two guitarists in turn take the lead, comp, play counterpoints and take simultaneous solos. The interplay between Yokouchi (heard from the right channel, with a fatter tone) and Konishi (the left channel) is effective and exciting.

Act III of François-Frédéric Guy's Beethoven Project. On the programme: Beethoven's complete music for cello and piano with cellist Xavier Phillips, recorded by Nicolas Bartholomée at the Arsenal in Metz. In 2008 Guy embarked on a major Beethoven project that has included recording and performing in concert all 32 Beethoven Sonatas and the 5 Piano Concertos. Guy is a dedicated chamber musician and he regularly performs Beethoven’s chamber music for strings and piano as well, with Tedi Papavrami and Xavier Phillips. As part of the Beethoven project, Guy has performed the complete cycle of 32 Sonatas in Washington, Paris, Monaco and recently at the Festival Berlioz in La Côte-Saint-André (August 2013). Born in Paris, Xavier Phillips started playing the cello at the age of 6. His encounter with Mstislav Rostropovitch proved especially fruitful since it marked the beginning of a long collaboration during which Xavier Phillips received the guidance and encouragement of the master cellist.

Features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player) and the latest 24bit 192kHz remastering. The Three Sounds pull away from the curb in a sweet sports car – a great cover image that really sets the tone for the entire record! The album's the epitome of early 60s class and cool that the group had to offer – as they effortlessly mix soulful groovers with mellower, more introspective pieces – all delivered by the godlike hands of Gene Harris on acoustic piano – already a giant in jazz, even at the start of his long career. The rhythm is great, too – sublime bass from Andy Simpkins, whose round, warm tone we always love – and just the right sort of work on drums from Bill Dowdy, who always keeps things on track. Titles include "Now's The Time", "Summertime", "Poinciana", "Here We Come", and "Sonnymoon For Two". Great cover too – with one of the all-time best "car jazz" images!
