The two volumes of Mermaid Avenue, released in 1998 and 2000 and named after the New York street where legendary folk artist Woody Guthrie lived in the 1940s, were collaborations between cult American alt-country/avant-garde rockers Wilco and revered British protest singer Billy Bragg, on which they set to music previously unreleased lyrics by Guthrie. This exhaustive four-disc set features both releases together with a whole new album of previously unreleased songs and the documentary Man in the Sand, which chronicles the project.
Like 1999's Voice in the Night, The Water Is Wide features Charles Lloyd in the company of one of his dearest friends, drummer Billy Higgins, who would pass away less than a year after the album's release. Guitarist John Abercrombie also remains on board, but Lloyd extends the group's generational span by recruiting two younger players: pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Larry Grenadier. The album begins with a straightforward, elegant reading of Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia."
This short-lived formation from the 70's were an offshoot of Welsh psychedelic band Man. Two of its members, namely keyboard player Phil Ryan and guitarist/bassist Will Youatt, left in 1973 to form the Neutrons with drummer John Weathers (Gentle Giant), violinist Stuart Gordon (Incredible String Band) and a slew of other musicians. They took their name from Iorwerth Pritchard and the Neutrons, a band Ryan and Youatt had created prior to forming the Neutrons.
Whereas the music of Man was predominantly guitar based, the Neutrons concentrate on the keyboards; their heavy use of synthesizers, a strong Gentle Giant edge as well as slight Brit-folk overtones characterize their sound…
