Having feted a number of significant composers in the past - from Fats Waller, W.C. Handy and Duke Ellington to Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy - this recent collaboration of Takase's with DJ Illvibe reveals a culmination of the pianist's fascination and influence of a non-jazz composer this time around in Conlon Nancarrow, who arguably was best known for his works for player pianos that went well beyond human capacity and capabilities. I have been working with DJ Illvibe for a long time and I think it relates to my inspiration of and approach to Nancarrow… (so) I thought I could compose in a similar way, explains Takase regarding this new project.

Brun grew up in Lucerne and his time active as a composer coincided with a period of high creative output of Swiss music. Brun’s repertoire sits alongside other native composers such as Honegger, Schoeck and Bloch. The crowded market, combined with the struggle to find a publisher (only three out of his ten symphonies were published in his lifetime) offers one indication as to why Brun’s works failed to reach the mainstream public. While not a household name, Brun is often touted as the Swiss answer to Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar. Brun’s works have a nostalgic touch; they draw on the Romantic and Classical eras in their emotional sincerity and defined forms, but always with a modern flavour.

Following the success of their Liszt album on Odradek, Duo Tsuyuki & Rosenboom marks its 10th anniversary as a partnership with 'Variations2', sets of variations for two pianos by Brahms, Saint-Saens and Lutoslawski. All the composers featured on this release were inspired by the music of others when writing their sets of variations. Brahms paid a very personal tribute to his late friend, Robert Schumann, when he chose Schumann's final work, the 'Ghost Variations', as the basis for his own Variations, Op. 23. We also hear Brahms' magnificent 'St Anthony' Variations inspired by Haydn, which culminate in a passacaglia (a set of variations within the variations): a masterful achievement through which Brahms elevates the form into music of real depth and sophistication.

Rudulf Serkin, in the company of Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra shine a wonderful light on Brahm's First Piano Concerto. Serkin brings the same radiance he delivers to Beethoven's "Emperor". Self-effacing, Serkin noted, "We are nothing next to the immense pieces we play… nothing, we are mere dwarfs". A challenging piece by any measure, Serkin's performance is well balanced with that of the orchestra, which play in harmony to produce elegant sound on this well-recorded Sony edition. The Handel Variations are a delightful change of pace as a makeweight.

Where do piano music and the noblest of all diamonds meet? Nobility, technical finesse, and the beauty of reflection can only explain a part of our fascination for diamonds – there remains a mystery, an inexplicable depth. It's the same with the musical works that pianist Johannes Obermeier has brought together in his GENUIN album "Brilliants". Schumann's radiant "Carnaval", Ravel's sparkling "Valses nobles et sentimentales", Chopin's and Godowsky's dazzling etudes, and Obermeier's own variations on a Schumann motif are mirrors and reflections of each other. This CD production is part of the Carl Bechstein Special Prize of the ARD Music Competition 2022 – one of numerous awards the young exceptional musician has earned in the past two years. A promising debut album!

The Belgian pianist Thérèse Malengreau has a particular interest in the relationship between music and the visual arts. With her first disc on BIS she offers us a rare opportunity to acquaint ourselves with the music of Hans Erich Apostel, banned as ‘degenerate’ by the Nazis in 1938, and a rarity in performance ever since. At the same time, her disc allows us insight into the interplay between composers and artists in other disciplines during the first decades of the twentieth century, in the context of movements such as Der Blaue Reiter, the arts magazine Der Sturm or the Vienna Workshop.

“… Michail Jurowski, who has conducted several of cpo's earlier Reznicek discs, has a good ear for the music's color and structure. These performances are vivid, convincing and nicely played, and the conductor resists the temptation to present the music too "winkingly." Bass Alexander Vassiliev makes a small but positive contribution in the Chamisso Variations. The engineering is bright and full too. If Korngold and Strauss are your "thing," you'll probably like this CD.”

As a servant to his craft, Heinz Rögner was influenced by the musical traditions of his hometown of Leipzig. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of his death, Genuin together with MDR, is dedicating a significant box set to the great conductor, featuring concert recordings from the Gewandhaus from 1994 to 2001. Originally from a humble background, the musician worked predominantly in Berlin and Leipzig but was also exceptionally well-known and popular in Japan. This box provides us with superb recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Franz Schubert and Anton Bruckner, as well as Reger's Mozart Variations and Gershwin's An American in Paris. The MDR Symphony Orchestra and the MDR Chamber Philharmonic perform at their best!
