Todo Sobre mi Madre [tout Sur ma Mère] 1999 [re Up]

Del lado del verano is an entertaining comedy from the Canary Islands that centres on the trials and tribulations of a wonderfully dysfunctional family, as they navigate the choppy waters of family feuds, love, betrayal, friendship and burgeoning sexuality. The film stars and is directed by well-known Spanish actress Antonia San Juan, best known for her role as Agrado in Pedro Almodóvar’s Todo sobre mi madre.

Dans ce récit intime poignant de vérité, Nathalie Petrowski retrace l’histoire de sa mère, Minou Petrowski, journaliste et écrivaine, grande amoureuse de la vie et du cinéma, morte en avril 2021. Elle s’ouvre sur la relation riche mais aussi complexe et parfois tourmentée qu’elle entretenait avec cette mère fantasque et farouchement libre.

Otto est un chômeur qui vit avec sa mère et vend des journaux dans le métro. Il est amoureux de Louna, apprentie coiffeuse venue d'Allemagne qu'il croise tous les jours dans la rue. Leur monde va basculer lorsque Louna perd son emploi et son logement et qu'Otto rencontre Ali, jeune immigré épris de philosophie. Ils partent tous les trois dans une joyeuse cavale de petits crimes vers l'Allemagne. En cours de route, ils adoptent une cigogne parlante retrouvée blessée au milieu du chemin.

Alors qu'elle attend son premier enfant, Emma apprend qu'elle a un cancer du sein. Le médecin qui le lui annonce prévoit un avortement, les soins préconisés étant, selon lui, incompatibles avec la grossesse. Simon, son compagnon, l'incite à consulter un autre spécialiste, le docteur Morin, qui affirme que les traitements peuvent être suivis tout en continuant la grossesse. Emma reprend confiance. Son corps qui l'a trahie redevient un lieu de vie: elle doit maintenant se battre pour deux.

Eine junge Frau, bei der sich die Liebe zu ihrem neu geborenen Baby nicht einstellen will, sieht sich als "Rabenmutter" gebrandmarkt und muss nach einem körperlichen wie seelischen Zusammenbruch therapeutische Hilfe in Anspruch nehmen, um langsam ins Leben und zu ihrem Kind zu finden. Der weitgehend aus der Binnenposition der Mutter erzählte Film ist eine ernstzunehmende Auseinandersetzung mit dem Tabuthema postnatale Depression. Obwohl er verschiedene Erscheinungsformen des Leidens auffächert, will er keine klinische Beschreibung eines Krankheitsbildes sein, sondern ergreift ambitioniert Partei für seine Protagonistin und ihr aus dem Gleichgewicht geratenes Seelenleben.

Freddy (Maurice Compte), who has a pregnant girlfriend back home and no prospects for the future, tries to board a moving train but only ends up losing his bag and cap. He meets a delinquent- looking adolescent named Albert (Paddy Connor) at a service station. Despite protests from Freddy, Albert sticks to him like glue and proves to be a useful companion. The reasons each character has for taking the long journey are revealed gradually. Freddy is looking for his uncle to get some news of his long-lost father, while Albert, who has escaped from reform school, is trying to find his mother with nothing more than a postcard she has written as a clue to her whereabouts…

In this recording, it’s interesting to compare the two works for so-called ‘small orchestra’, Le Tombeau de Couperin and Ma mère l’Oye. For, when discussing Ravel’s orchestral music, one thinks more readily of the large symphony orchestra in all its luxuriance, of the teeming array of percussion, which often requires a timpanist and seven percussionists.
