When Viktoria Tolstoy invites you to meet her at the movies, the emotions will run high, and it will be a pleasure and a privilege to accept. Viktoria Tolstoy’s voice has an intriguing, bittersweet, melting quality. And there’s her unique way of lingering tantalizingly between drama and melodrama. And there’s the way she simultaneously reveals both her Swedish heart and her Russian soul.

Though there are many beautiful singing voices in jazz today, Viktoria Tolstoy is one of a kind. A great melodramatist of jazz who is also bipolar, she makes happiness sound fragile and threatened, and bitterness sweet and enchanting. She has framed and perfected this art on a conceptual level since becoming an ACT artist in 2003, whether concentrating on material from Esbjörn Svensson - whose e.s.t. began to some extent as her accompanying trio - or, most recently, on Herbie Hancock, classical originals, Swedish standards or repertoire from Russia, the home of her ancestors.

Viktoria Tolstoy achieved both a national and international breakthrough with her ACT debut album "Shining On You". While she had already shown on her Blue Note Album "White Russian" with E.S.T. (1997), that she belonged to the first rank of young Swedish female jazz musicians, she was virtually unknown outside her homeland. While the music for the first ACT album by the great-great-granddaughter of Leo Tolstoy was all specially composed by Esbjörn Svensson, this "beautiful singer with classiness coursing in her blood" (Tonart) has dedicated her latest totally to her home country. My Swedish Heart is an expression of love and a tribute to the great Swedish jazz composers from Lars Gullin to her contemporaries.

Viktoria Tolstoy’s Act debut album, Shining On You, from 2004, can now be seen as a defining moment, marking the beginning of the continuing success story of popular jazz voices from Scandinavia. The music was written by Esbjörn Svensson, who also formed the core band together with Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström and was soon to become world-famous as ‘e.s.t.’. The album, produced by Nils Landgren, was also a gathering of the Act family of artists - also in its infancy back then - who joined the session as guests.

ACT's star Viktoria Tolstoy has recorded 12 songs for (and in most cases by) Herbie Hancock. With "Letters to Herbie" Tolstoy was faced with a tough choice. Her smart decision was not to pick the biggest hits, such as "Cantaloupe Island" or "Watermelon Man", which have already been covered too often. Her choice of songs fits together perfectly, although the selection covers Hancocks different musical eras.
