It's hard to listen to the music of Tommy Bolin and not wonder what could've been if the exceptionally talented (and versatile) guitarist hadn't succumbed to a senseless drug overdose at the age of 25 – just as his career appeared to be taking off. In a recording career that lasted only several years, Bolin not only touched upon several styles (blues-rock, ballads, fusion, funk, reggae, and heavy metal), but showed that he could master each one – as evidenced by his two solo albums and various recordings with the likes of Zephyr, Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, the James Gang, Deep Purple, and Moxy.

After the breakup of Deep Purple in 1976, guitarist Tommy Bolin wasted little time beginning work on his second solo album, Private Eyes. While it was more of a conventional rock album than its predecessor, Teaser (which served primarily as a showcase for his guitar skills and contained several jazz/rock instrumentals), it was not as potent. The performances aren't as inspired as those on Teaser or even those on Bolin's lone album with Deep Purple, Come Taste the Band, although there a few highlights could be found.

Whips and Roses is a collection of previously unreleased material from the 1975 rock album Teaser by Tommy Bolin. Released on April 25, 2006, it features newly discovered takes from songs found on Teaser as well as several instrumental jams heard for the first time on this album. Several songs on Whips and Roses were originally released on the album Teaser. These versions are remixed from alternate takes remaining from the Teaser sessions. Many of these new renditions feature extended arrangements and radically alternate guitar solos from the original album.

When Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in early 1975, many fans figured that the band was over. But with the arrival of worthy replacement Tommy Bolin, the band was suddenly back in business with the oft-overlooked Come Taste the Band release. What the prior members of Deep Purple didn't know, however, is that their new guitarist had a serious drug problem, which hampered his playing by the time the group landed in Japan for a series of shows in December of 1975. With Bolin allegedly having no feeling in one of his arms on the night of a Purple gig at the Budokan, the show was to be taped for a future release.

Boy, talk about a return to form. Black Oak Arkansas' first new album in over ten years is easily the best thing they've done since their '70s heyday. This record reunites the men who formed the band way back in 1963, frontman extraordinaire Jim Dandy (prime exponent of "Dandyism"), rhythm guitarist Rickie Lee Reynolds, and bassman Dirty Daugherty. The chemistry that is still there is amazing.

Spectrum is Billy Cobham's solo debut as composer and he takes us through familiar musical realms, reminiscent of both his past work with Miles Davis as well as the aggressive depiction of Jazz Fusion composed by The Mahavishnu Orchestra. 'Quadrant 4' starts off the album on a high note. Immediately, without hesitation or restrain, the music erupts with the passionate dexterity of it's musicians. Tommy Bolin and Billy Cobham have developed quite the synergy during the recording sessions, and it can be easily perceived by this performance alone.

Recorded at Pirate Sound Studio, CA, June 1975. Recorded during studio rehearsals in the summer of 1975 with their new guitarist Tommy Bolin, this previously unissued set includes early versions of "Come Taste.." album tracks, and several lengthy instrumental jams. Track 10 is not to find in the booklet, it is an impromptu version of "I Got You Babe" by Sonny Bono.
