Rainforest Band is a collaboration between guitarist Vernon 'Ice' Black, bassist Tony Saunders and keyboardist Sylvester Burks. The inspiration for the group came from the original Rainforest Band formed by Merl Saunders (Tony's dad), featuring Jerry Garcia. The 1990 project Blues From the Rainforest - a Musical Suite was created out of Merl and Jerry's need to spread the word about the beauty of the rainforest, as well as the message of preservation. With influences of world music, new age and traditional blues, Saunders and company crafted tunes that took the listener on a spiritual and musical journey that was close to their hearts.

It would be difficult to find any musician who experienced such exhilarating highs and such soul crushing lows as did David Crosby on his journey through the 60s and beyond. As the 70s progressed, Crosby began to demonstrate increasingly erratic behaviour, and by the 80s he was deep in the grips of a serious drug abuse problem and his feet were firmly planted on a path of self-destruction. His downward spiral finally bottomed out in 1985, when a drug-related arrest in Dallas resulted in a prison term that forced Crosby to endure the painful steps toward recovery that would eventually save his life. In 1984, the year prior to the big crash, Crosby took to the road, performing solo acoustic sets followed by full blown electric sets that featured an outstanding band of younger San Francisco-based musicians, while former Byrdmate Roger McGuinn opened for the tour. All in all, the Beacon Theater performance from March 24th offers an honest glimpse of Crosby in 1984, a monstrously talented musician headed toward oblivion, but thankfully avoiding such a disaster.

The only label financed from the proceeds of bagging groceries, Renfro Records operated at the fringe of the Los Angeles music business. “There was so much talent around in those days,” founder Anthony Renfro said. “Everyone could sing and they were literally singing on the street corners. Twenty dollars for drink or weed would get them into a studio at the click of the fingers.” Those clicks resulted in heavenly northern soul sides from Morris Chestnut, The Attractions, and Carl Henderson, alongside dreamy girl group pop from The Sequins, The Stunners, and Tender Loving Care. The label’s ten-year run is captured in its near-entirety across three virtual “discs,” sorted by tempo for talcum enthusiasts and steppers alike.

The Herald label was founded in 1950 by Fred Mendelsohn, formerly with Savoy, and he was soon joined by Al Silver, who owned the pressing plant that made the label’s records. Silver had an ear for R&B and doowop, and built Herald into a creative hub for R&B recording and most particularly becoming renowned for its output of doowop recordings by a string of different groups during the late ‘50s and into the 1960s.

“Choctaw Ridge” explores a new country sound, one that emerged at the end of the 60s in the wake of Bobbie Gentry’s ‘Ode To Billie Joe’, a shock number one hit in 1967. When singers like Gentry, Jimmy Webb, Michael Nesmith and Lee Hazlewood moved from the south to Los Angeles to make it in the music business, they were not part of the Nashville in-crowd and they forged a new direction.
