Recording technology at the start of the 21st century is probably the best that can be achieved, but a steady flow of historic audiophile reissues demonstrates that the improvement of sound quality has been a decades-long quest, and the first superb efforts are still worth hearing today.

Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector with vocals like Roy Orbison's, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio. He loved rock & roll, whether it was the initial blast from the '50s or the mini-symphonies from the days before the Beatles or the garage rockers that surfaced in the wake of the British Invasion, and all this could be heard within his wild, wooly collective E Street Band, a group who debuted on his second album, 1973's The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, and who would support him throughout most of his career.

Jeff Buckley Since he was the son of cult songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley faced more expectations and preconceived notions than most singer/songwriters. Perhaps it wasn't surprising that Jeff Buckley's music was related to his father's by only the thinnest of margins. Buckley's voice was grand and sweeping, which fit with the mock-operatic grandeur of his Van Morrison-meets-Led Zeppelin music. His audacious debut, Grace, made him one of the most popular alternative artists of the '90s, accentuated by his early and tragic death in 1997, and his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" virtually redefined the song for a modern audience. Buckley began playing while in high school.

Factory continues its campaign of archival ELP live releases with Live in California, 1974, the first-ever official release of their legendary California Jam (AKA CalJam)performance, which captured the band at its peak, playing for the largest audience in its career. Says Greg Lake, "The band was at the very pinnacle of their performing powers, the event was of biblical proportions and the performance itself was almost flawless." With Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on bass and vocals and Carl Palmer on drums, ELP broadened the audience or progressive rock. The band released a series of landmark albums in the 1970s, and several more in the '90s after a 14-year hiatus.

SUPERB BROADCAST RECORDING FROM ELP S LATE- 90S REFORMATION TOUR After a period in the mid-1980s, when Keith Emerson and Greg Lake reformed as Emerson, Lake & Powell - with former Rainbow drummer Cozy Powell, but after one 1986 album and a tour, the trio went their separate ways. But in 1991, Emerson, Lake & Palmer reformed and issued a 1992 comeback album, Black Moon, on Victory Records. Their 1992-93 world tours were successful, culminating in a performance at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. In 1994, the band released a followup album, In the Hot Seat, after which they went on hiatus because of health problems suffered by both Carl Palmer and Keith Emerson Emerson and Palmer eventually recovered enough to start touring again, beginning in 1996.

While Baez declined to record again in the US unless she could get on a major label, she did make several live albums in Europe in the interim. This is the best of them, mixing old favorites like "Farewell, Angelina" with new originals like her heartfelt "For the Children of the Eighties."

The story revolves around Marie, the canteen girl of the Regiment, whose lover Tonio joins the army to be near her just as she is claimed for marriage into nobility.
