Originally released in 1986, Don't Touch the Light is the debut album by the long-running German melodic hard rock band Bonfire. The band already had a pair of albums under its belt under the name Cacumen, so Bonfire's debut sounded like anything but a rookie effort…
“Maybe when I’m ninety…?” When Siggi Loch first floated the idea that Joachim Kühn might like to make an album of ballads, the pianist’s response was typically jocular, even defi-ant. That initial resistance didn’t last long, however. Kühn, now in his mid-seventies, soon started to settle down at the fine Steinway in his home – he keeps it impeccably tuned – to switch on his DAT recorder, and set to work. “The advantage of being here at home in Ibiza is that I can simply make a re-cording when I want to. When the feeling comes, I just re-cord,” Kühn reflects.

It would be incorrect to say that not much has changed Fourplay's sound since they began recording together in 1991. That said, while these musicians – who were all successful artists individually – have continued to evolve, as a group they've stayed remarkably focused on what they do best: play elegant, seamless, contemporary jazz with a light sexy groove. Keyboardist Bob James, drummer/percussionist Harvey Mason, and bassist Nathan East have remained constants but guitarists have come and gone: Chuck Loeb replaces Larry Carlton (who originally replaced founding member Lee Ritenour) for Let's Touch the Sky, Fourplay's 12th recording. Fourplay's formulaic approach is firmly intact on Let's Touch the Sky and the band is firing on all cylinder, making this a fine entry in 2010's contemporary jazz oeuvre.
The assorted musical box that is progressive rock has often led artists to take creative risks in order to reach higher levels of innovation whilst releasing music that often has no limitations sonically or conceptually and most definitely are outside of genre constraints. Between The Buried and Me is a 21st century example of this approach, dazzling audiences with their skillful musicianship and constantly leaping between different genres from progressive rock, death metal, gypsy and electronic music. Despite the band’s relentless output, front man Thomas Giles began a solo side project under his own name, encapsulating all his personal musical interests by executing ideas and sounds that are contemporary and vintage all at the same time…
