Arild Brøter has unveiled “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Suite: Part 1,” the first single from his new album, A Spectre of Sounds: James Bond Music Reimagined. This suite comprises four themes from the film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”: the main theme, “Gumbold’s Safe,” “Over and Out,” and the iconic “James Bond Theme.” The track features an electric, uptempo arrangement with numerous twists, showcasing Brøter’s innovative approach.
Abba took a risk by launching this 1975 album (their second) with "Mamma Mia." How do you possibly follow that up? Simple–wait two songs and then zoom into "SOS," one of the best pop songs ever written. The rest of the album does not quite reach those dizzying heights, but it's strong nevertheless. Abba is all over the map, as if the band was still putting the finishing touches on its identity. Some songs, most notably "Hey, Hey Helen" and "Rock Me," are sustained by classic glam, Gary Glitter-like riffs. There's also the neoclassical, quasiprog instrumental "Intermezzo No. 1." This CD's two bonus tracks include the rather banal "Crazy World" (the B-side of the "Money, Money, Money" single) and the downright bizarre "Pick a Bale of Cotton/On Top of Old Smokey/Midnight Special." The only cover Abba ever recorded, this medley was recorded in 1975 for a German charity album and was remixed in 1978 for the B-side of the "Summer Night City" single. ~ Elisabeth Vincentelli
On their new album, The Playfords present songs and music from the time of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). All the pieces are arranged by the set for voices, recorders, stringed instruments as well as percussion. The varied repertoire of the recording includes instrumental pieces by the English composer Tobias Hume, intimate songs by Heinrich Schütz and a dance Courant Dolorosa by Samuel Scheidt. Various songs that were printed at the time on pamphlets and sold thousands of times are also to be discovered. Ballads, folk songs and hymns refer to war heroes, sadness and sorrow caused by war, but also to hope and peace.

Over a decade before Richard Wagner's Valkyries took their celebrated ride, August Bournonville and Johann Peter Emilius Hartmanns Valkyrie danced on the Danish stage. Born in Copenhagen, son of French dancers, Bournonville founded the national Danish ballet with a series of ballets drawing its themes from Nordic mythology and early Danish history. For his first such project, Bournonville turned to his childhood friend Hartmann, who already had established himself as a composer of music on national themes.
