This was a three part series that aired on the History Channel of footage, all of it in color, that was culled from various film archives and home movie collections. While some of the color footage of Hitler has been seen before (the footage from Hitler's home movies) the rest of the footage has not been seen. It is amazing to see this footage in bright color. While the series only three parts, and not enough time to go through the entire War in depth, there apparently are hundreds of more hours of footage left on the cutting room floor, and one can only hope that there will be future shows.

The Woman in Red[Original Soundtrack] Review by William Ruhlmann
Stevie Wonder's career in the 1980s was a source of frustration to the fans he had earned in the '60s and '70s. In 1982, there were a few new songs on a greatest-hits album and a duet with Paul McCartney. Then came this soundtrack to a Gene Wilder comedy that was simultaneously more of a pop vocal album than most soundtracks and yet less than a full-fledged Wonder record. The gold-selling number one hit that resulted was the sappy "I Just Called to Say I Love You," a formulaic TV commercial-in-the-making. "Love Light in Flight" also hit, and the album featured Dionne Warwick on two duets and one solo. This was a pleasant record, but slight, and after four years, Wonder fans wanted more than that.

Historian Bettany Hughes gives her personal take on the diverse cultures of the ancient world in this 2010 documentary series on More 4. The series begins with an examination of Alexandria, the city founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC to become the world’s first global centre of culture. The programme explores Alexandria’s role as a powerhouse of science and learning, and focuses on the female mathematician, astronomer and philosopher Hypatia, the subject of the feature film Agora, starring Rachel Weisz.

I'll admit I'm not objective, but I enjoyed "For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism," a documentary made by an American film critic about American film critics. Gerald Peary, longtime Boston Phoenix critic and a professor of film, spent four years conducting interviews for this breezy history, which starts with the origins of American reviewing in descriptive notes.

Here are the orchestral and `easy' instrumental hits, both big and small - but mostly big - that helped define the Golden Age of Popular Music, an era spanning, roughly, 1956-1967, when the US charts were brimming with an eclectic cornucopia of sounds and styles that is unlikely to be repeated in today's age corporate, socially engineered music making. `Hits With Strings And Things' is an important addition to this best-selling Ace series.

Jazzthetik and ME/Sounds author Michael Möhring delved into the extensive archives of the renowned labels Prestige, Fantasy, Milestone and Stax to unearth plenty of groovy to easy loungy flared trousers and organ jazz for this ultimately successful and appealingly designed compilation Promote: 14 tracks from the original Blaxploitation era 1965-1975 and two remakes from the peak of the "acid jazz" boom in 1995, including Jack McDuff & George Benson, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Isaac Hayes, Gene Ammons, Charles Earland, Kenny Burrell, Cannonball Adderley, Ron Holloway & Gil Scott-Heron, Funk Inc., and Donald Byrd's Blackbyrds. A not to be scoffed at supplement for those who can't get enough of this kind of funky groove jazz stuff.

Elmer Bernstein's score for To Kill a Mockingbird is regarded as one of the greatest film scores and has been recorded three times. It was first released in April 1963 on Ava; then Bernstein re-recorded it in the 1970s for his Film Music Collection series; and finally, he recorded the complete score (below) in 1996 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for the Varese Sarabande Film Classics series.
