Since it was founded in 2015, this vivacious trio has revelled in big ideas and committed itself to refreshing great works of the piano trio repertory with a new dynamic. Following its debut recording of the complete Beethoven piano trios, no less, Trio Sōra has now delved into all that Brahms has to offer in the oeuvre for its second album, this Nme on the La Dolce Volta label.
Russian Roots is the début recording of Trio Gaspard for Chandos Records, for which the group is joined by the soprano Katharina Konradi in a diverse and rewarding programme that explores the Russian influence across almost 200 years of music. A selection of Russian folksongs set by Beethoven, Shostakovich’s First Piano Trio and Seven Romances on Poems by Blok, and Weinberg’s Jewish Songs form the backbone of the recital. These are complemented by vocalises (wordless songs) by Stravinsky, Rachmaninoff, Gubaidulina, and Auerbach.
The two works for piano trio included here represent extreme points in Schubert’s career as a composer. The Sonatensatz, a sonata movement, was written in 1812, while Schubert was still at school. The second of his two completed piano trios, D. 929, dates from 1827 and was played at the first and only public concert of Schubert’s compositions during his lifetime. While the Sonatensatz shows promise, at the very least, the Piano Trio in E flat major shows this promise fully realized.
Tempered by Rimsky-Korsakov’s orientalism and Tchaikovsky’s eclectic refinement, Anton Arensky’s pristine, elevated style is nowhere more arresting than in his two splendid piano trios. These richly sonorous, predominantly elegiac compositions are magnificently played by the Beaux Arts Trio. Recorded sound is of demonstration quality, and these sensational accounts deserve the strongest conceivable recommendation.
Audiences and the press praise the Morgenstern Trio for their exceptional standards of chamber music and technique. Their sophisticated interpretations fascinate with well-considered, subtle nuances. Above all, their unmistakable desire for collective expression, their ever perceptible curiosity, and the immediacy of this group‘s passion for music enchant all listeners alike.
The “best of my works,” as Beethoven described his String Trios Op.9 when they were published in July 1798.
Hailed by the magazine BBC Music for its ‘generous and warm-hearted, utterly beguiling playing’, the Neave Trio has emerged as one of the finest young ensembles of its generation. It has been praised by WQXR Radio in New York City for its ‘bright and radiant music making’, described by The Strad as having ‘elegant phrasing and deft control of textures’, and praised by The New York Times for its ‘excellent performances’. Here, the trio presents a programme of music connected by the theme of Remembrance. Rachmaninoff’s early first piano trio was inspired by Tchaikovsky’s trio in A minor, and shows illuminating glimpses of the mature composer to come. The elegiac mood of Rachmaninoff’s work is matched by that of Brahms’s first trio – again an early composition – which was inspired by the composer’s (unrequited) feelings for Clara Schumann.
Chamber musicians Chul-Kyu Jung, Si-Hyun Lee and Min-Ji Kang joined forces in 2019 with the common goal of making a positive impact on society and founded the Amour Piano Trio. They harmonize together under the term “Love: Amour” and are looking for a way to communicate with the audience through your concerts.
