Waler Hayes has risen from the ashes in his second/debut album ‘Boom‘. After his first album, “Reason To Rhyme” didn’t quite go to plan Hayes took a completely different source of inspiration in his music; songs from the heart. Of the 10 tracks on the album, Hayes wrote or co-wrote every single one of them with ideas that sprout from the darkest days to simple life hearted moments.

The bond between musicians can be more than a strong rapport on the bandstand. Sometimes the intuitiveness can be so robust that a partnership between two musicians can supersede any musical combination that could be put around it. This is precisely what Hayes Greenfield and Dean Johnson have found in their musical partnership and is on full display on their new recording, Lover To You.

Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era's most accomplished soul artists. With the Theme From Shaft, Hayes delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. This CD features cinematic moments of instrumentation, composed and produced by Hayes while being performed by the Bar-Kays - some down-tempo, others quite jazzy.

By 1969, black artists were following rock's lead and recording extended epics. At the forefront of such experimentation was big bad Isaac Hayes, coauthor of countless Stax classics and an artist in his own right. On this "Hot Buttered Soul" Hayes takes two MOR-pop benchmarks, Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By" and Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and spins them out into slow-building sermons lasting 12 and 18.5 minutes apiece. Heavily romantic, they predate by two years Barry White's symphonic adventures in the same style, revolutionizing soul music in the process. Meanwhile, on the album's third epic, the 10-minute "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic", Hayes and his backing band the Bar-Kays wind up sounding, bizarrely, like a black Crazy Horse.

Jacob Artved is the youngest of a very talented new generation of Danish jazz guitar players. At the age of 20 he has already been a working musician for years, being introduced on the scene by Danish guitar legend Jacob Fischer at the age of 15. He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Music as the youngest student ever, but chose to drop out, move to New York and spent the long nights jamming instead.

"Tubby Hayes is undoubtedly one of the most important, influential and ground-breaking UK jazz musicians of all time. During the ‘50s and early ‘60s, Hayes had stood apart from many of his UK-based contemporaries, displaying a self-confidence and virtuoso musical delivery that placed him neck-and-neck with many of the leading American jazzmen of the day. He worked with the likes of Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington and his many fans included Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Rollins. He had his own primetime TV show and was the face of UK jazz.

A Hayes Named Martha. There were many singers around in the ‘50s—out and out pop singers, pop singers who had forsaken jazz, jazz-tinged singers, jazz influenced singers—but very few jazz singers. Martha Hayes spoke in the jazz tradition with a contemporary feeling. On her album A Hayes Named Martha, her interpretation, phrasing and swing, coupled with her emotional depth is what turned her vocals into actual jazz. She had a natural, unaffected voice, at times reminiscent of Billie Holiday. The jazz mood is expertly set by the solos and background accompaniment of Steve Foster and Lou Fratturo, the perfect complement to the jazz voice of Martha Hayes.
