29 July 2020 marks the 50th anniversary Sir John Barbirolli’s passing. He died at the age of 70, having been born in 1899 in London to parents of Italian and French origin.

This album from Passacaille with the exceptional baroque violinist Mayumi Hirasaki presents masterpieces of the virtuoso violin literature with 'scordatura', which had its heyday between about 1600 and 1730. In addition to well-known names such as Biber and Tartini, the varied and cleverly arranged programme also features charming rarities by Johann Joseph Vilsmayr and Pietro Castrucci.

The Italian composers of the seventeenth century, living at the time of Galileo, were at the forefront of a musical revolution that offers some surprising analogies with the birth of the modern scientific method. Just as Galileo with his telescope was able to observe the sky and discover new celestial objects, so the musicians of the time strove to fathom the depths of the human soul with their wind and bowed or plucked string instruments.

I tell you what - everything has its shelf life. Except these insatiable obsessive fragments of spirit that we cant shake and make us do stupid things like devote serious time to an unserious pursuit like amateur music making. I just try to not think and see what comes out, then you hear you are meant to be a fascist editor once the basic form is there, and, well, that part is a dog chewing on its own innards. But here it is, something kind of childish, angry but middle age frustrated too. Political but selfish and powerless. Before the editorial faculty arrived, it was meant to be about hidden power and about a protagonist i guess is someone i wish i had met, to help them make sense of things. But in the end, its just me.

The project began in discussions with Ryan Keberle about what more we could do to address the changes towards justice we both see as crucial to our country and our society. Racial justice. Climate justice. Voting justice. Gender justice. Scientific justice. And now the push for science to begin to push back the virus so we can all gather together again. We decided we could make music devoted to civic engagement and speaking out on these issues. And in an election year, we saw the band touring in swing states around the country. Without any touring, those plans changed. But I was determined to follow through on the creative vision for the project and began writing in earnest in April 2020.

Violinist, violist and conductor Cláudio Cruz and cellist and arranger Raïff Dantas Barreto meet in Beethoven: Duets, an album that will be released in digital format by Azul Music this Friday (18). Ludwig Van Beethoven is present in the musical formation and career of the two musicians: in recordings, CDs, classes, concerts, arrangements, memories and transcriptions. But it is the three duets for clarinet and bassoon WoO 27 that make up the album's repertoire. The works were transcribed by the two musicians for violin and cello. The CD also includes the original piece for viola and cello Eyeglasses WoO 32, known as the “Eyeglasses Duo”.
