Maurice Ravel said about him «A great musician is born, a really extraordinary one». He achieved his first international success playing with Joseph Szigeti, the famous violinist. After the war he was one of the first musicians who played in Paris and, after 1947, in USA. Among the countless outstanding events of his career may be mentioned the first performance of Prokofiev’s «VII Sonata», that of Strawinsky’s «Capriccio» under the direction of the composer, «tournées» in Europe, USA, Japan and Israel.

I think Karl Böhm's live performances of Strauss operas represent some of his best work; this is a companion piece to his live Daphne which has yet to be bettered despite being another elderly, live recording, albeit in narrow stereo. It is in comparatively restricted mono but one soon forgets that, given the quality of the performance.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: In terms of the subtlety of many of the instrumental passages, the originality and perfection of form, and the intensity of its expressivity, the concerto in A major, written during the draught of “Figaro”, is one of the aristocrats among Mozart’s concertos, and is therefore set as a pinnacle of his creativity.

Alligator continues its Trumpet reissue series with an excellent 15-cut anthology covering early Rice Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson II) material, some of it also including guitarist Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup and guitarist Bobo "Slim" Thomas. Miller was honing the uncanny technique that made him a harmonica legend, playing long overtones, spitting lines, droning and angular phrases that are now part of blues lore. His voice was gaining strength and stature, and he repeatedly demonstrated the kind of vocal character and instrumental acumen later immortalized on his Chess sessions. Alligator has found a genuine treasure chest with this series.

Where else can you meet a musician? On the road! As well as music, performers and composers share a sense of travel. Constantly on the move, they travel the world to make themselves known or discover other cultures, and many musical works reflect their peregrinations, real or imaginary: Beethoven takes us to Ukraine with Schöne Minka, we dance in Hungarian, Slavic or Russian style with Brahms, Dvorak or Stravinsky, or even Brazilian with Milhaud… Violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky and pianist Georgy Tchaidze open their travel diaries for a world tour of the imaginary: bon voyage!

The second year of the Année de pèlerinagededicated to Italy, is judged overall to be the most important of the three. The whole series of the second year was published in 1858 and was preceded by two compilations which date from 1837 and 1849 respectively. On this recording the three Petrarca Sonnets are presented. The appearance of these Sonnets in Liszt's works dated back to around 1838 as lieder for voice and piano, which were later excellently transcribed for piano solo.

"Regeneration Mode" is an album by the duo Chuck van Zyl and Peter D. Gulch (both known from the project The Nightcrawlers) filled with vintage, but most of all adventurous and future electronic music. It’s cosmic music pur sang, now and then briefly tapping in the heritage of the Berliner School style of the early '70’s while taking the listener out on a 60-minute atmospheric trip through the vast unknown. The highly cinematic outcome though is less traditional. A deep sense of mystery already announces itself on the strong, almost 30-minute album opener "Sector Zero Zero One". It’s a beautifully moulded sonic sci-fi story through dense soundscapes with quite some turns and twists along the ride.
The album continues with four shorter pieces that keep immersing in darkening, dense atmospheric moods…
