È un vero e proprio esodo, che coinvolge anche gli esuli austriaci e tedeschi che in Francia credevano di aver trovato un rifugio sicuro dalla minaccia hitleriana nel 1933. La Gestapo si mette subito sulle tracce di Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Heinrich Mann, Franz Werfel, e di tanti dissidenti che dovranno nuovamente scappare. I loro destini e quelli di altri scrittori e artisti, nonché di centinaia di profughi meno noti, convergeranno nel 1940 a Marsiglia.

Hummel stands as the last in the great Viennese line which embraced Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. He lived and studied with Mozart in his youth and, despite a career which saw him triumph as a conductor, composer and virtuoso pianist, Hummel never lost his reverence for his celebrated teacher. Unless one lived in a major European centre with an orchestra, the opportunity to hear large-scale works by the great composers of the age was well-nigh impossible. The insatiable demand for new chamber versions of famed orchestral works saw Hummel arranging Beethoven’s Symphonies nos. 2 and 6 ‘Pastoral’ not long after the great composer’s death. Hummel approached his task with great care, bringing a fresh perspective to the works in his sensitive and compelling chamber music configurations. Gronau strongly believes that art, and specifically music, is a tie that binds together every human from all countries and cultures. “There are special things in life that can only be described by music and art.
