Somewhere (somehow) between the feverish grooves of Madchester and the anthemic charge of the Britpop brigade, musically eclectic mavericks No-Man made a small mark on the early 1990s UK Independent music scene. Essentially a solo venture, Recoil began whilst Wilder was still in Depeche Mode as an outlet for his experimental, less pop-oriented compositions. Once he announced his departure from the group in 1995, Recoil was transformed from a small side-project into Wilder's primary musical enterprise.

A cross-genre fertilisation of Punk, Post-Punk, Electronica, Dub, Euro Disco and unique one-offs – a reflection of what Jon Savage was listening to in the late 70s. The seventh in my series of Ace singles comps reaches the years 1977-79. Unlike the earlier 70s, when I’d been streamed into the rock world, I’d started to listen to a wider variety of music during that time – punk, obviously, but also the beginning of post-punk, early homegrown electronica, European synth disco, dub, a bit new wave and unique one-offs such as Subway Sect’s ‘Dontsplitit’ or the Lines’ ‘White Night’ – that represents a turbulent, highly creative period which reflected a divided, increasingly harsh world outside. • It was the late 70s, with symbols clashing everywhere, and I was in the thick of it – having moved from fan and consumer to practitioner – first with Sounds from April 1977 onwards, and then with Melody Maker from October 1978 on.

Judie Tzuke - Left Hand Talking (1991) [Expanded Remastered Reissue 2008] Music

2008 reissue of this album from the respected British singer/songwriter featuring four bonus tracks: 'Safe House', 'Dog Rose', 'Outlaws' (12" Version) and 'God Only Knows' (12" Alternative Mix), Judie's best known single is undoubtedly "Stay With Me 'Till Dawn", which reached #16 in 1979. This 1991album features a re-recorded version of that classic single. The CD booklet features a discography, lyrics and sleeve notes all built around the original CD sleeve. Apart from her solo recordings and session work, Judie was featured as lead vocalist and co-writer on two tracks on the Morcheeba album Dive Deep including the single 'Enjoy The Ride'.

What’s Up Matador is a 2-CD (or 2-LP) compilation that was released by Matador Records that chronicles some of the best artists within their roster during the 90s. The first disc serves as a bit of a “best of” collection, featuring indie standouts by Yo La Tango, Pizzicato Five, Cat Power, Helium, and of course, Liz Phair. The second disc is what is particularly noteworthy, as it features previously unreleased material from many of the same artists. This marks the official debut of Liz’s “Stuck On An Island,” a b-side that fans would later discover was in the initial running for whitechocolatespaceegg.
