Bob Thiele is one of the great producers. For his work with John Coltrane alone, where he gave free reign to the saxophone great's wildest musical visions including 'A Love Supreme', ignoring the usual cost consciousness of a major label, he deserves to be lauded. In addition to this his 8 years at Impulse saw him recording seminal works by scores of musicians including late blooming masterpieces by Ellington and Hodges, and a whole wave of 'new thing' jazzers such as Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders. He didn't stop there and when he launched his own label Flying Dutchman in 1969, he continued to innovate and record music that reflected its times, but that also resonates down through the ages.

Springtime is with us again, which means Array time. Welcome to the ninth installment of our yearly compilation; the top tracks from the past year, some special new finds and our upcoming bangers. Two of our favorite acts (and people) join together for the opening salvo. Pete Herbert doing some serious dancefloor destruction on Hiem's Highlife. A gem from their recent album. We take a trip down Prince Lane next with the 1985 Paisley Park inspired Shield Of Love from Russian genre spanner Unclepasha, North London Soul producer OD Hunte and label head Loudery combining with Sare on the remix. Raykos new protegee Tania Haroshika is next with their summery laid-back, disco smoocher. Slovenian Sare Havlicek is next with the lead single from his recent Soft Machine album. Here we go with an exclusive slo-mo synth disco groover from Kim and Buran. Hot Hot Hawk probably have the coolest disco name around.

Carlos Kleiber's bat from 1975 is a discographic highlight. Inspired by an unforgettable production at Munich's Staatsoper, where Kleiber conducted almost all the performances of this bat production up to 1988, the recording from the Herkulessaal presents an unrivalled degree of presence and stage magic, also in the dialogues.

Recorded in the Autumn of 1975 at Abbey Road studios (with some sessions also taking place at AIR studios in London), ‘Sunburst Finish’ was the third album by Be Bop Deluxe and the first to feature the line-up of Bill Nelson (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Charlie Tumahai (bass, vocals), Andy Clark (keyboards) and Simon Fox (drums). It was also the first Be-Bop album to be co- produced by Nelson and John Leckie. An album of immense musical inventiveness and creativity, ‘Sunburst Finish’ was one of the finest albums of its era, a perfect cohesion of ten classic songs written by Nelson (featuring his highly imaginative guitar playing) and a stylised and striking artwork package. Including such classic tracks as ‘Heavenly Homes’, ‘Crying To The Sky’, ‘Sleep That Burns’, ‘Life In The Air Age’, ‘Crystal Gazing’ and ‘Blazing Apostles’, the album also spawned the hit single ‘Ships In The Night’ and launched Be-Bop Deluxe as one of the major breakthrough acts of 1976.

What do two Faces do when their lead singer (bon vivant Rod Stewart) doesn’t show up for the Ooh La La recording sessions? They work on a soundtrack for an obscure film by actor and friend Alexis Kanner (most famous for his guest roles on the late-‘60s TV series The Prisoner), and draft the uppermost rank of British rock royalty to play on it! Indeed, given the pedigree of the personnel on this project, it is rather stunning how obscure this 1976 album from Faces members Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane remains, having only been issued on CD abroad and for a brief time at that (and never reissued on LP); one suspects it has much to do with the flop of the film (which appears to have only been screened at the Canadian Film Festival), and the fact that the original LP was released four years after it was recorded in 1972.

The Quick's one and only album, 1976's Mondo Deco, is a glittering, goofy, and exhilarating snapshot of a crazy, fast-paced era. The mid-'70s were a time when bands could change their images overnight, singers could be discovered and forgotten over the course of one show, and the movers and shakers behind the scenes jockeyed to get their charges publicity and eventually record sales. Sort of like any other time in music history, but with more feathered hair and skinny ties. The Quick had the requisite mover in Kim Fowley, who managed to get them a record deal with Mercury Records and set up with producer Earle Mankey, who had been in Sparks, one of the Quick's main influences.
