VA Rockin'

Rockin' USA is a 2CD compilation released in 1994 by Starland Music in association with Warner Special Products. Oddly, artists like A Flock of Seagulls, Howard Jones, Whitesnake, Yes, Londonbeat, Christina McVie, Billy Ocean and Gary Numan are not from the USA while some songs aren't even "rock" so who knows what they were trying to do with this, other to sell a few to make some (name your local currency here). During the 1950s Memphis was named the USA's cleanest and safest city and the diversified population had reached nearly 400,000. This 4CD compilation looks at the music recorded in Memphis and its environs by native Memphians and shows the stupendous effect the sounds had on the world of popular music. Music had always abounded in Memphis but there were no recording facilities there, an omission that one Sam Phillips was about to rectify, he opened the Memphis Recording Service at 706 Union Avenue on the 2nd of January 1950. He proceeded to record anything that moved including weddings, funerals and artists for WREC radio. He soon went on to record artists for record labels such as Gilt Edge and 4 Star and it didn't take more than a few months for him to record the likes of B.B. King, a young Ike Turner with Jackie Brenston, and madcap Rufus Thomas. Come 1952 Sam started his own record label, Sun, and the rest as they say is history.

Christmas is generally regarded as the feast of love, even if Christmas is not always beautiful for everyone. The Rock'n'Roll contemporaries of the 1950s already recognized this when they tried to break out of established family traditions. The songs in this compilation represent both opposites sharply to each other. On the one hand Paul Anka's It's Christmas Everywhere, with all its lights and snowflakes, but Bobbie & Boobie keep it cool with their Cool, Cool Christmas. And in-between Patti Page's Santa Claus dances the boogie woogie and Edd 'Kookie' Byrnes teaches us the Christmas time under the Beatniks!

Throughout the 1960s there were regional scenes throughout the USA that occasionally lobbed indie recordings onto the charts. But more importantly, the artists in these locales combined national influences with unique local twists to create original sounds. One of the more identifiable such pockets of artistry was barrio of mid-60s East Los Angeles. The national hits included Cannibal & The Headhunters reworking of Chris Kenner's "Land of 1000 Dances" (later reworked to even greater chart success by Wilson Pickett) and the garage-rock classic "Farmer John" by the Premiers, but the non-charting local radio spins and club favorites were just as good.

While folks who turn out semi-authorized compilations of rare rock & roll must spend months on end digging through stacks of dusty vinyl in search of rare gems, the people at Collector Records in Germany have blazed a new trail with the disc, Savage Rockin' Girls, by unearthing an unusually hip beer commercial, "That Regal Feeling," a radio spot for Regal, a brand of suds brewed in New Orleans that boasts some hot guitar picking and cool vocals from an unknown female singer who sure knows how to make the product sound tasty. While that isn't quite the highlight of Savage Rockin' Girls, the tune does suit this disc, which collects 35 ultra-obscure rockin' sides from the '50s, all featuring high-attitude female vocalists.
