Songs For Groovy Children assembles all four historic debut concerts by Jimi Hendrix’s newly assembled Band of Gypsys at New York’s Fillmore East on New Years Eve 1969 and New Years Day 1970. Presented in their original performance sequence and encompassing 43 tracks across 5 CDs or 8LPs, the set boasts over two dozen tracks that have either never before been released commercially or have been newly remixed plus the full extended versions of songs originally released on the 1970 Band of Gypsys album. Measured alongside his triumphs at Monterey Pop and Woodstock, Hendrix’s legendary Fillmore East concerts illustrated a critical turning point in a radiant career filled with indefinite possibilities. Earlier in 1969, The Jimi Hendrix Experience had closed a musical chapter and the guitarist assembled a new trio dubbed Band of Gypsys, consisting of Hendrix, his longtime friend Billy Cox, on bass, whom he had befriended when both were serving with the 101st Airborne Division Cox and Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles, who would also contribute occasional lead vocals.

Ever since he started rumbling about releasing his archives some 20, 30 years ago – it's been so long, it's hard to keep track of the specifics – Neil Young talked about it as a mammoth box set, or perhaps a series of box sets each chronicling a different era in his career, comprised entirely of unreleased recordings, some live, some studio. It was an eagerly anticipated set, since everybody knew that he had scores of unreleased recordings in his vaults. Not just songs, but full albums that were scrapped at the last minute.

This superbly recorded double disc (the original engineer was Eddie Kramer, best-known for his work with Hendrix) captured over a weekend worth of dates in February 1970 at the venerable New York City venue catches the Brit boogie quartet at the peak of their powers. These shows were sandwiched between their triumphant Woodstock set and the release of Cricklewood Green, generally considered the band's best work. They find the group primed through years of roadwork, as well as obviously excited to be playing in front of an appreciative N.Y.C. crowd…

Live at the Fillmore East is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix released on February 23, 1999. The album documents Hendrix's performances with the Band of Gypsys at the Fillmore East on December 31, 1969 and January 1, 1970. It is drawn from the same performances as, and can be seen as an extended complement to, the Band of Gypsys album, consisting mostly of songs not on the original album. Continuing right where the seminal classic Band Of Gypsys left off, Live At The Fillmore East expands on the ageless classic. Features 16 stunning recordings, 13 previously unreleased, from the series of four New Year's concerts at Bill Graham's famed Fillmore East Theater.

The first release from Neil Young’s long awaited Archive Performance series is Live At The Fillmore East. In 2006, Neil Young delivered another hit album, Living With War, and toured with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Thirty-six years earlier, in 1970, Young toured with CSN&Y and released his platinum album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, after which he performed a series of shows at New York City’s then-new Fillmore East with his band Crazy Horse. That concert finally made its official debut in the annals of rock history with Live At The Fillmore East, and the circle is unbroken for one of rock’s greatest singer-songwriters. The original release charted Top 15 and three Grammy® nominations, including for Best Rock Album.

Miles Davis - Live At The Fillmore East (March 7, 1970) - It's About That Time (2001) [2CD]

The creative vision of Miles Davis was at its most mercurial in the late '60s and early '70s. He advanced the language of jazz (and pop) not just … Full Descriptionwith each album, but practically with each gig. A perfect case in point is this live two-disc set. LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST is like manna from heaven for Miles fans, its nine cuts all previously unreleased performances from a formation of Miles's band that didn't stabilize long enough for a studio release. A considerably different version of this band had recorded the groundbreaking BITCHES BREW not much more than six months before this Fillmore appearance, but the record released as AT THE FILLMORE in 1971, featured yet another incarnation, sans Wayne Shorter, whose last gig with Miles is captured here.

Accordingly, this release finds Davis and cohorts in transition between the abstract jazz-rock of BITCHES BREW and the funkified, modal jams of subsequent recordings. The two sets documented here draw largely from BITCHES BREW, but the variations just a few months down the line are startling. Chick Corea's ring-modulated electric piano creates a Stockhausen-like maelstrom of sound, while Shorter plays some of the most daring, freewheeling solos of his career. Dave Holland splits the difference between funk, rock, and jazz, joining with Jack DeJohnette's roiling drums to forge a tumbling sonic carnival ride. The entire band blazes through every tune working on all cylinders, making a monstrously joyful noise by which the rest of us are still edified, even decades after the fact.
