By the mid-Seventies, the label had enjoyed over 30 significant mainstream chart hits by such illustrious performers as Desmond Dekker, the Maytals, Bob and Marcia, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Dave and Ansel Collins, the Pioneers – and many, many more. Alongside these major successes, Trojan showcased the work of literally hundreds of Jamaican music makers, from artists whose careers remain shrouded in mystery to future international recording stars. Over the years since its creation, the iconic label has continued to grow and develop, attracting new fans with each new generation. 2018 witnesses Trojan’s half centenary and to celebrate this most momentous of years comes a super deluxe multi-format box set, which reflects the amazing diversity of the label’s output over the past 50 years.

In 1969 reggae and the skinhead look hit the big time in the UK. The fortunes of the music and new look were of course closely intertwined, with skinheads largely instrumental in propelling the music from Jamaica into the British charts. But while the singles and albums that became hits have since provided the focus for numerous compilations, the lesser known records, bought by the die-hards and aficionados, have been largely overlooked.

The "Best of Ska" issued by the British import label Disky Records is a unique collection of Jamaican influenced ska. There are few collections of ska that include a good cross section of the earliest ska classics from Jamaica in the Sixties in the same collection as music of the Great Ska Revival in the United Kingdom in the Eighties.
The "Best of Ska" may disappoint the ska purists but the consistent quality of this massive 3 disc cd is the best argument for musical pluralism I've ever heard. Hard core music collectors often develop tunnel vision and dismiss innovation, simply on the basis of its "inauthenic" origins and end up missing a lot of great music in the process. As such, the music of younger generation of UK ska players should be judged on it's own merits, and not a set of "a priori" standards established by musical snobs.
