This release kicks off a new series exploring China’s rich and diverse musical heritage. The songs featured in this recording are folk songs of the five minority ethnic groups of Qinghai and Gansu provinces – Tu, Bonan, Dongxiang, Yugur and Salar. As with Chinese traditional visual arts, the song titles explain their mood and origin. The five minority ethnic groups that perform on this album mainly live in seven autonomous counties under the administration of the Gansu and Qinghai Provinces in northwestern China. Bordering Qinghai to the west, Gansu is located between the Tibetan Plateau and the Loess Plateau. The Yellow River flows through the southern part of Gansu, where the Qilian Mountains are located. Volume 2, Folk Songs of Inner Mongolia and Heilongjiang is scheduled for release in October 2019.

Too bad the film "Sliver" wasn't a hit, or else this could've been one of the greatest film soundtracks of all-time. While most soundtracks just throw songs together without much thought, there's a theme on this album. You can feel the atmosphere of loneliness, lust, and mystery even if you've never seen the film. Enigma's haunting "Carly's Song" and "Carly's Loneliness" are great tracks to get you in a trance, Massive Attack's "Unfinished Symphony" is downright sexy, and Aftershock's "Slave To The Vibe" is the album's showstopper. The film (which was beautifully shot in an MTV style) could rightfully be a showcase just for these songs, kinda like "Purple Rain".

Director Jonathan Demme has developed a reputation for assembling especially interesting soundtracks to such previous movies as Something Wild and Married to the Mob, but he's never gotten quite such high-powered talent to work for him as he has on this collection of songs from Philadelphia. Topping the list, of course, is Bruce Springsteen's Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning gold Top Ten hit "Streets of Philadelphia" (even if it seems to be as much about homelessness as about AIDS, the movie's subject). But also included is Neil Young's "Philadelphia," arguably a better song, and a new number by Peter Gabriel, "Lovetown." Those are the major contributions, although Spin Doctors do a nice version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," and Indigo Girls' take on Danny Whitten's "I Don't Want to Talk About It" is equally enjoyable. And there's the excerpt from the opera Andrea Chenier by Maria Callas that makes such a striking scene in the movie (minus Tom Hanks' commentary), and a piece of Howard Shore's score.

January 2023; much like the sleeper-hit "New Directions In Music; Significant Contemporary Works For The Computer" ([CP 199.08 CD]; exactly 10 "Dots" back) this regional collection of "Academic" Digital Music research, centered around the studio at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY (just southeast of Syracuse) was issued a pair of LPs on Composer Dexter Morrill's Private "Redwood Records" imprint. What makes the studio especially interesting is that; unlike, say, MIT's CM research on largely Music-360-adjacent systems, Colgate's studio is centerpieced by a DCC (Digital Computer Corporation) PDP-10 which was kitted out with a "Four channel digital to analog converter designed and built by Joseph Zingeim."

More Music from the Rum Diary, the second collection of material from the 2011 film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's 1998 book, relies less on composer Christopher Young's jazzy, Caribbean-inspired score and more on selections from period players like Mantovani & His Orchestra, Ismael Rivera, Dick Dale & His Del-Tones, and Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers. The last six tracks on the collection are from Young, with Patti Smith providing vocals on one of two versions of "The Mermaid Song."

The Omega Productions Records is proud to present you for the first time on a physical support, the music from Ghostland (2018) composed by Georges Boukoff, Anthony d’Amario and Ed Rig. Produced ten years after Martyrs, Pascal Laugier’s Ghostland is the latest frontal shock of the French new horror wave. Collecting all the prizes at Gérardmer in 2018 and with more than 650 000 entries in the world, this new gothic and demonstrative nightmare affirms itself in negative of the previous hit film of the director. Featuring a cast worn, among others by the icon of the French pop Mylène Farmer, Ghostland offers the radical vision of a certain cinema, but also a metaphor on innocence and achieving one’s dreams. A graphic tale for adults.
