Excellent CD that collects the best tracks by the talented female artists signed to EMI's French labels. British stars like Sandie Shaw recorded material exclusively for France - and she's heard with her rare French-only track "Rien N'est Fini". Remastered from the original sources at Abbey Road, La Belle Epoque - EMI's French Girls 1965-68 presents these 20 tracks as they've never been heard before. Some tracks have previously been included on French compilations or bootlegs, however, the sound quality here is a revelation. Original mono and stereo have been used, preserving the integrity of the original recordings.

Devised by Laetitia Grimaldi and Ammiel Bushakevitz, "Ombres" brings together songs by nine women composers whose lives span the years 1821-1964. Many of the songs were written during the so-called "Belle Époque", at a time when women might be accepted as performers - especially in domestic settings - but struggled to be recognised as composers. And even in the cases when their music was heard - for instance in the fashionable salons of Paris - or published, it soon fell into oblivion. Several of the songs included here were discovered by Grimaldi and Bushakevitz in libraries and archives, having gone out of print long ago.With "Ombres", the performers liberate the nine composers from their shadowy existence, and demonstrate the wide range of their music, from Cécile Chaminade’s bustling Villanelle to Pauline Viardot’s nocturnal Les étoiles or the ghostly Les lavandières by Augusta Holmès, about the Midnight Washerwomen from Celtic mythology.

Although there are those who nail their spirals to Vertigo as the prog label of choice, EMI’s Harvest certainly vies with it for pole position. With Harvest, the detail was everything. Loaded with the bizarre, striking and the strange, turns abounded like the Third Ear Band, Kevin Ayers and The Greatest Show On Earth. From the bad acid of Edgar Broughton’s There’s No Vibrations, But Wait through the squiffy majesty of Dave Mason’s You Shouldn’t Have Took More Than You Gave, to Be- Bop Deluxe’s future pop of Jet Silver and the Dolls Of Venus, this collection is impressive and nostalgic – its very lack of a house style providing its consistency.

La véritable grande escroquerie du rock and roll , c’est pas du côté des Pistols, enfin de Mac Laren et son film « The Great Rock and Roll Swindle » que vous la trouverez… c’est plutôt en Belgique qu’il faut la chercher, plus précisément chez Lou Deprijck et Yvan Lacomblez, deux bruxellois pur jus. Si leurs noms, là, tout de suite, ne vous disent rien, en revanche, il y a de fortes chances que vous vous soyez déjà trémoussés sur le hit interplanétaire dont ils sont les heureux (et depuis fortunés…) créateurs : “Ca plane pour moi”!
