A unique imprint, based in Vancouver but operating with a global perspective, issued a retrospective in 1995 to celebrate a major anniversary. Decadence: 10 Years of Nettwerk offers a captivating, five-disc overview of the label's multiple personalities. Nettwerk's roots lie in leading-edge electro-pop and techno-rock, although it has also nurtured a talented lineup of semi-acoustic-based singer-songwriter types, led by introspective thrush Sarah McLachlan. The combination works because the acoustic contingent isn't American-style granola/folkie stuff, but a sophisticated, Euro-artsy variety that shares compatible reference points with its more wired division.

This is the album where Jeff Lynne finally found the sound he'd wanted since co-founding Electric Light Orchestra three years earlier. Up to this point, most of the group's music had been self-contained – Lynne, Richard Tandy, et al., providing whatever was needed, vocally or instrumentally, even if it meant overdubbing their work layer upon layer. Lynne saw the limitations of this process, however, and opted for the presence of an orchestra – it was only 30 pieces, but the result was a much richer musical palette than the group had ever had to work with, and their most ambitious and successful record up to that time.

The key components to every great prog-rock album comprise memorable guitar riffs, punchy immediacy that draws you into the song, ample rhythmic kick, and the imaginative capacity to transport the listener to a place well beyond the confines of reality. Yes’ The Yes Album features all of these rare qualities and more, the 1971 record as significant for saving the band’s career as well as for establishing new parameters in virtuosic technicality and skilled composition.
