Also known as Blues A La Carte, this Vee Jay disc has tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter's first session as a leader and it shows that, even at this early stage, Shorter was far along toward developing his own sound. Teamed up with trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the six selections (five of which are Shorter originals) capture the young tenor shortly after he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The music is essentially hard bop and, although none of these Shorter tunes caught on, the music is quite enjoyable. A special treat is the one standard of the date, a swinging version of "Mack The Knife."

Rare 1992 UK 127-track remastered 6-CD box set compilation featuring a complete as possible collection of recordings from John Lee Hooker's Vee-Jay years, including previously unreleased tracks. Themaster expresses the passion of the blues, from blue mood to the boogie, showing his ability to transcend generations and conquer new audiences. Each disc is issued in a jewel case picture sleeve and housed in a silver embossed picture slipcase with a 28-page booklet.
John Lee Hooker was beloved worldwide as the king of the endless boogie, a genuine blues superstar whose droning, hypnotic one-chord grooves were at once both ultra-primitive and timeless. But John Lee Hooker recorded in a great many more styles than that over a career that stretched across more than half a century.

Jimmy Reed signed with Chicago's Vee-Jay Records in 1953 and he stayed with the label for nearly a dozen years, during a decade where blues had its last great run as a hit singles medium. Reed was partially responsible for the golden age of blues hits on the R&B charts in the '50s, racking up nine Billboard R&B Top 10 singles between 1955 and 1961. All the hits, along with their flipsides – and, sometimes, the spoken introduction not released on a 45 – are here on this magnificent triple-disc set from Craft Recordings.

Here, the ongoing saga continues with this sharply produced set featuring trumpeter Lee Morgan and saxophonist Wayne Shorter's recordings for the now defunct, Chicago, IL-based Vee-Jay recording label. With this six-CD compilation, the listener will find meticulously detailed annotations of the story behind Vee-Jay, chronological accounts of the musicians' backgrounds and basically what was transpiring during 1959 and 1961, which denotes the time frame of these sessions.

This release contains the complete Vee-Jay studio recordings by the Wynton Kelly trio for the first time ever on one edition. The Wynton Kelly heard here (from the period 1959-1961), as the original liner notes clearly state, was at the peak of his fruitful collaboration with Miles Davis, with Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and the inimitable John Coltrane filling out the celebrated quintet. So it is truly interesting to hear Kelly as the main performer, displaying his own personality and even playing some of his own compositions.
