During some of the selections on his SteepleChase CD, guitarist Vic Juris displays an echoey tone reminiscent of John Scofield while on a few other numbers he has a dryer and subtle acoustic sound. Juris' improvising is on a high level, performing "Estate," "Falling in Love With Love," two obscurities, and six group originals (four of which are his) with creativity. His sidemen (pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Steve LaSpina, and drummer Jeff Hirshfield) are alert and have quick reactions. Two high points are the eccentric "Dekooning" and a tasteful bossa nova rendition of "Estate," numbers that best show off Juris' impressive flexibility.

Consideration of Vic Juris’ CV reveals a career arc common to a jazz guitarist of his age and distinction. Home study on the instrument as an adolescent, avid exposure to seminal albums, teenage years spent ripening in rock bands, connections made with mentors, regular gigs as a sideman and leader parlayed into a parallel path and an educator in academia. Eye Contact is Juris’ fourteenth project at the helm for Steeplechase and he has easily another four times that in the service of colleagues. The album stands out in that veritable forest for featuring his strings in the company of just bass and drums, handled ably by Jay Anderson and Adam Nussbaum respectively.

New York's stalwart ensemble Vic Juris Trio (with Jay Anderson and Adam Nussbaum) has been regularly performing Vic Juris' compositions, which are recording ready for this session. Vic's trademark versatility and inventiveness come to the fore with the use of electric and acoustic guitars. "Juris' inventive lines and rich harmonic gifts are apparent from the beginning, as is the familiarity of the trio with one another…The trio…is truly interactive in their stunning interpretation. It's hard to describe a jazz artist in his 60s as 'a talent deserving of wider recognition', but with CDs like this, Vic Juris has made an ample case." - Ken Dryden, New York City Jazz on 'Eye Contact'

Vic Juris has added another guitar trio masterpiece here on his ever-growing body of recorded works. He is joined by bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Adam Nussbaum. Since his SteepleChase debut album 'Night Tripper' of 1994, guitarist Vic Juris has been presenting unique musical universe of unassuming virtuosity and versatility, of which John Kelman of AllAboutJazz once pertinently described as "fresh, in-the-moment and connected to the broadest possible tradition. Vic Plays Victor Young is a sensitive melodically exploratory album of standards and rarely covered airs, as should be expected from a seasoned ensemble with a compatible repertoire.

On this enjoyable release, bebop altoist Richie Cole performs seven of the main themes from West Side Story, plus his own complex "West Side Blues." Cole teams up with his longtime guitarist Vic Juris, pianist Lou Forestieri, bassist Ed Howard, drummer Tommy Campbell and veteran percussionist Ray Mantilla to give the familiar melodies his "alto madness" treatment, being respectful of the themes while stretching out. Highlights include "America", "Maria" and "Tonight".

While the blues is one of the clearest roots of conventional jazz tradition, few but saxophonist Dave Liebman could release an album that covers as many stylistic bases as Blues All Ways. There's good reason why Liebman can create a blues homage ranging from the 7/4 Memphis shuffle of "Elvis the Pelvis" and lithe, harmonically sophisticated swinger "Down Time" to the ethereal "Riz's Blues." With a quartet with this much shared history, the saxophonist has a lean but highly flexible unit that can not only handle anything he throws at it, but can lob more than a few surprises back at him. Any release from this group is worth hearing but Blues All Ways, like the largely undiscovered masterpiece Conversation (Sunnyside, 2003), stands out amongst its growing discography.

'While in Pass Manchac' features Scott Wendholt from the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Pillow on alto. 'Charlotte and Evan' features Gary Versace on piano and Pillow on alto. 'Don't Explain' is a tour de force for the one and only Vic Juris on guitar. Hermeto Pascoal's 'Bebe' is one of his most well known compositions, practically a Brazilian standard. It's given a slower treatment here, featuring Gary Versace on accordion, Pillow on clarinet and the percussion and drumming of Rogerio Boccato and Rich Thompson. Williams' 'Pee Wee' first appeared on Miles Davis' 'Sorcerer', from 1967, a period where Wayne Shorter supplied most of the compositions for the group. This one features Vic Juris on guitar and Pillow on alto flute. 'Oska T' is one of Monk's most underperformed pieces. Here Scott Wendholt and Alan Ferber stretch out and show how versatile they are. 'Abschied, Ray' features Gary Versace, and finally 'Atchafalaya Fiction' features Alan Ferber who shows why he is in such demand and Gary Versace again demonstrates his remarkable talents.
