Paul Hindemith’s life was dominated by the events of the two world wars. In 1917, his discovery of contemporary Expressionist poetry and drama transformed him from a talented student to Germany’s leading new composer. His one-act operas Sancta Susanna and Das Nusch-Nuschi date from this period. Sancta Susanna – Hindemith’s first masterpiece – combines religious and erotic symbolism into an eerie narrative that was shocking for its time, whereas the dance suite from Das Nusch-Nuschi emphasises the plot’s origin as a Burmese comedy. The three symphonic movements from the opera Mathis der Maler refer to the three panels of the Isenheim Altarpiece by Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald, but also graphically reflect Hindemith’s own artistic struggles in Nazi Germany.

Over the years Johnny Mathis has recorded a number of Christmas albums and this is a very good example the best of them. Recorded in Hollywood in 1986,a good 27 years after recording his first festive album in New York City with Percy Faith,this album does not contain any traditional Christmas carols but rather an excellent selection of modern pop oriented Christmas songs.This is a lovely album with an excellent choice of songs and the talents of such great arrangers as Henry Mancini,Jeremy Lubbock and Ray Ellis are used here to great effect. All the orchestrations are gorgeous and well balanced and the sound is wonderful.

"Johnny" is an album by American pop singer Johnny Mathis that was released on July 15, 1963, by Columbia Records and later described on Allmusic as "a nice blend of standards, show tunes and then-new compositions." The LP debuted on Billboard magazine's album chart in the issue dated August 24, 1963, and remained there for 27 weeks, during which time it got as high as #20. One song from the album, "No Man Can Stand Alone", had been released on May 7 of that year as the B-side of "Every Step of the Way". This album was "remixed and mastered from the original session tapes in 20-bit Super Bit Mapping" for its first release on compact disc on May 7, 1996.

"Johnny's Greatest Hits" is a compilation album by American vocalist Johnny Mathis that was released by Columbia Records in 1958, and has been described as the "original greatest-hits package". It collected all but one of the songs from the first six singles he recorded, including eight A- and B-sides that made the singles charts in The Billboard (now simply known as Billboard magazine) as well as three B-sides that did not chart and one new track ("I Look at You") that was co-written by Mathis but not released as a single. The collection includes "Chances Are", "It's Not for Me to Say", "Wonderful! Wonderful!", and "The Twelfth of Never". This LP stayed on the charts for ten years.

Of course, there are a few of his big '50s hits "Misty," "A Certain Smile," "The Twelfth of Never," "Chances Are" as well as a few songs covered on recent albums "99 Miles from L.A." from 1975's Feelings, "When a Child Is Born" from 1976's I Only Have Eyes for You, "Begin the Beguine" from 1979's The Best Days of My Life (and an adult contemporary chart entry), and "Memory" from 1982's Friends in Love.
