Supremely heavy work from organist Leon Spencer – one of his classic jazz funk sessions for Prestige Records, and a record that shows him opening up his sound a bit more than before! The album has Spencer working in a few different lineups – some with small groups that feature Melvin Sparks on guitar and Idris Muhammad on drums – others with some slightly larger instrumentation and even a bit of strings, used in a sophisticatedly soulful style that reminds us a bit of CTI or Kudu backings of the time!
A long, long time ago… that’s how a fairy tale about the Swedish band which never joined the first league of fame dominated by their peers Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi, but which certainly had their share of success back in the ‘80s, should start. And although it could have ended at the point of the group being swept by grunge/alternative wave of the early ‘90s, it seems 220 Volt are eager to write at least one more chapter of the story. Seventeen years after the release of Lethal Illusion, which most probably ended up lost in the mists of time, the Swedes come back with Walking In Starlight.
The reassuring calm that descends on Day 3 of Ludovico Einaudi’s mountain walks continues to Day 4. “Low Mist,” whispering, gently pulsing, throws off its last vestiges of anxiety, while the bite of the “Cold Wind” has been blunted. The inner peace for which Einaudi searches is surely within reach. But life is never that simple. The wind, although softer, still whistles plaintively through the trees in “Matches,” while Einaudi’s “View From the Other Side” has an air of nostalgia. The subtlety of Seven Days Walkingis its complexity: Einaudi’s continually shifting musical perspectives and emotional openness are both fascinating and heartwarming.
Phronesis are a dynamic trio who need little introduction. Their fourth album, Walking Dark, is the highly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed Alive [Edition EDN1021], which was voted Jazz Album of the Year by both Jazzwise and MOJO magazines in 2010. Since the success of this release, the band has toured widely across Europe and North America, earning consistent praise for their vibrant live performances. Formed by Danish bass player Jasper Høiby in 2005, the energy and individuality of Phronesis comes from an extraordinary democracy of expression and almost telepathic empathy between the musicians - three of the finest players on the European jazz scene today.
