A high-art concept album about an overwhelming passion between two writers is a bold foundational choice on which to craft one’s debut, but Winnipeg-based duo Heavy Bell is composed of a seasoned indie rock veteran (Royal Canoe’s Matt Peters) and an actor/singer-songwriter (Tom Keenan), both of whom dream a little bigger than some of us.

This CD version of Infra features the bonus track, "Sub Piano."

Japanese-Australian comedian and musician George Miller – who built an audience on the internet as Filthy Frank and the Lycra-wearing "Harlem Shake"-ing Pink Guy – is also a serious artist crafting downtempo, moody reflections under the Joji moniker on efforts like In Tongues. He made his debut in 2011 with the absurdist online comedy series The Filthy Frank Show, which garnered Miller over four million followers and pop culture renown with his viral "Harlem Shake" dance. He rode his ensuing popularity by releasing an album of popular vignettes, the self-titled Pink Guy, in 2014. With a built-in fan base, Pink Guy's 2016 release, Pink Season, topped download charts and climbed to number 76 on the Billboard 200. In addition to trap rap-influenced tracks, the album also featured downtempo electronic textures reflecting his non-comedic songwriting as Joji. He would spin that trip-hop-inspired songcraft into a full exercise on 2017's In Tongues, a six-song EP of introspective musings and piano-based electronic explorations similar to tracks by Jinsang and eevee.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins was an eccentric man, who wore outlandish outfits, (Leopardskin and red leather were a favorite combo from the 1940's on) claimed to practice voodoo and carried a skull named Henry on stage with him every time he sprang from his casket to perform his amazing music. His I Put a Spell on You (1956) remains rock and roll's most singular recording, and was selected as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The song sets out the template for the man's career : big-voiced Hawkins singing an impassioned appeal to a lost love or some other banal thing. So, here we have a Voodootastic selection of Screamin' Jay's finest early performances, to delight a terrified audience once more, including many, some would say mercifully, un-issued perfomances. Buy it, and be afraid! A first time collection of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' finest seminal early performances.

The Numero Group turn their radio to yet another spot on the dial – this time around posing as a 70s AOR station, but working with their usual flair for rare and unreleased tunes! Given that the musical style is one that you're used to associating with big hits, it's great to hear music like this coming from deeper in the American underground – served up by artists who weren't trying to stand apart from the pack – just try to create their own top-shelf music in a relatively overlooked environment.

Her music has a classic soul and jazz vibe but with the sassy edge of a girl who has grown up round Ladbroke Grove and seen what effect modern day London has on people. Her songs are timeless but still relate to young people growing up right now and she can just as often be found sandwiched between a rapper and a DJ on the bill as a line-up of jazz players at Ronnie Scotts.

A dozen years have passed since Molly Johnson took a sharp left turn, departing the hard-edged world of art-rock bands Alta Moda and the Infidels for richer jazz pastures. Her star has since risen considerably in her native Canada, and she’s earned near-equal popularity across France. But it wasn’t until the release of her fifth solo album, 2008’s Lucky, that Johnson started gaining traction south of the 49th parallel. Stateside listeners have some catching up to, and this 16-track compilation is just the ticket…

"Inkpot" from 1972 was the fourth album from Shocking Blues with Mariska Veres as a leadsinger. It was also the fourth album released in three years, and you may suspect that songwriter and guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen has been under heavy pressure to continually come up with new songs to the group's records; perhaps this is why the group chose to record three cover songs. At any rate "Inkpot" appears less homogenous than the previous albums…
