For his third Criss Cross album, pianist Misha Tsiganov presents a nine-tune program of four original compositions and kaleidoscopic arrangements of two Wayne Shorter classics, two Great American Songbook standards, and a Russian folk song. As on Artistry of the Standard Criss 1367) and Spring Feelings (Criss 1384), the St. Petersburg native – a U.S resident since 1993 – teams with trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, both leaders of multiple Criss Cross dates and internationally renowned practitioners of their respective instruments. Joining Tsiganov for the first time on Playing with the Wind are bassist Matt Brewer (Mythology, Criss 1373, and Unspoken, Criss 1390) and drummer Dan Weiss, who apply their virtuosic chops to Tsiganov's elegant charts with an open, poetic attitude.

Review
This is a terrific introduction to a mostly forgotten or ignored composer. Some of the intervals and progressions seem to be precursors for very modern jazz. Maybe that's my take on it but Leopold Sylvius Weiss is worth exploring, and Robert Barto seems to have spent a lot of time learning and understanding these rigorous and exhilirating compostions.

Esnaola National School of Music" bei Silvia Fernandez und Gabriel Schebor, bevor sie 1997 in die Lautenklasse von Hopkinson Smith an der „Schola Cantorum Basiliensis" eintrat, wo sie 2001 ihr Solistendiplom erlangt hat. It is a pleasure to see the rerelease of Paul Beier's first effort on the Baroque Lute, recorded in a small church in Switzerland nearly twenty years ago. He had originally planned a program that included the works presented here, plus the suite in E minor by Bach, but after editing we found that the total time of the recording was over 90 minutes, and so sacrificed the Bach suite to be able to release the CD (which can hold no more than 80 minutes worth of music).
