Listening to the (deservedly) much-hyped debut album from Wet Leg, you might wonder if front women Hester Chambers and Rhian Teasdale come from another planet—one that doesn't know or understand the conventions of Western pop songs. That's how quirky and just plain weird their songwriting and performing can be. There is no aim to be pretty, and it's refreshing. The finest example of this is the band's killer first single, "Chaise Longue," with Chambers disaffectedly—almost as if reading from a user's manual—reciting blush-inducing double entendres (including the Mean Girls quote "Is your muffin buttered? Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?") over drums that tick like a time bomb, until it all erupts in a tilt-a-whirl dizzy chorus.

Southern Rock, Blues Rock

It has an atrocious title and an atrocious album cover, but Wet Willie's eponymous debut is a good slice of Southern rock. The band occasionally stretches out a bit, getting into bluesy improvised sections, but their main talent is for laidback Southern grooves. The album is a little uneven, but "Shame, Shame, Shame," "Dirty Leg" and "Have a Good Time" illustrate their potential.

Punk - New Wave | Label: The Chats

The history of punk rock is rife with underground aggressors who enjoy a surprise brush with mainstream notoriety thanks to an atypically sunny song that teeters precariously close to novelty-tune status. So the crossover success of the Chats is all the more remarkable given that it came through their surliest song. With the 2017 single “Smoko,” the Australian trio not only scored an anti-social anthem that’s since been covered by the likes of YUNGBLUD and Wet Leg, they also transformed regional vernacular—in this case, Aussie slang for “smoke break”—into an international catchphrase. Vividly channeling the boiled-blood irritation of a service-industry worker who’d sooner gut you than waste a precious second of their five-minute puff session making idle conversation, “Smoko” nonetheless possessed the sort of Seinfeldian relatability that landed the then-teenaged band on morning shows and the 6 o’clock news back home. But since then, the Chats have hardly gone out of their way to make themselves more respectable for the masses. The best songs on their 2020 debut High Risk Behaviour concerned venereal disease, getting caught wanking on webcam, and gorging yourself on rump steak. Now their second album comes bearing a title that’s practically begging to get them disinvited from the late-night talk show circuit.

Inhaler occupy a peculiar place in 2023’s music scene. They appear as a typical indie-rock band: four members, a heart-throb singer and songs about young adulthood powered by guitars and bravado. But they’re signed to a major label in Polydor, and frontman Elijah Hewson’s dad is Bono, 21st century’s most divisive musical figures. A curious juxtaposition.

Vinegar Joe might very easily have been Island Records' answer to the Allman Bros. or Wet Willie. A sextet formed out of a busted big-band rock outfit called Dada, they were brought together at the suggestion of Island founder Chris Blackwell. Elkie Brooks (vocals), Robert Palmer (vocals, guitar), Pete Gage (guitars, piano), and Steve York (bass, harmonica), were at the core of the group, with Tim Hinkley and then Mike Deacon on keyboards, and Conrad Isadore and Keef Hartley, and then John Woods and Pete Gavin on drums–the band cut three albums for between 1971 and 1973. Their live shows were well reviewed and attracted significant audiences in England, but this was never reflected in their record sales. They split up in 1973, with Robert Palmer becoming an international star as a pop-rock blue-eyed soul singer and Elkie Brooks a success as an MOR singer with Pete Gage as her arranger. Collection includes: Vinegar Joe (1972); Rock'n Roll Gypsies (1972); Six Star General (1973); Six Star Gypsies (1993).
