The four Mozart flute quartets make up a nicely tidy CD, and the Nash Ensemble's neat and pointed playing make it an enjoyable one too. Philippa Davies is a pleasure to listen to, clean and unusually even in tone, a tone which is round and full but not in the least watery; lively and rhythmic in her articulation. And the string players give firm, indeed sturdy support.

The Prazák Quartet has long distinguished itself with its passionate, nationalistic interpretations of late Romantic composers such as Dvorák, Smetana, and Janácek, as well as insightful and precision playing of composers from the Second Viennese School such as Schoenberg, Webern, and Bern. That this ensemble produces successful, enjoyable recordings of string quartets of the aforementioned composers is not now in question. What is questionable is whether or not the same approach the Prazák uses for Janácek or Schoenberg will produce a convincing recording of the Mozart "Haydn" quartets, and the answer is no. The ensemble's sound throughout this recording is simply too sparse and piercing, particularly in the first violin. The viola and cello sound quite nasal and strained. Much of the time, the approach to the instruments is exceedingly forceful and harsh. When the musicians do finally get around to trying to produce a piano dynamic, their sound appears out of breath, almost as if they have difficulty maintaining contact with the string while playing softly. The superior audio fidelity of this SACD release only heightens listeners' awareness of these shortcomings in sound quality. Gone are traces of elegance, gracefulness, or decorum that many listeners will find intrinsic in enjoyable performances of Mozart.

Yury Markovich Kramarov (1929-1982), one of the best representatives of St. Petersburg viola school, the outstanding Russian musician and teacher, has contributed a great deal to the development of the national viola art. In 1952 Kramarov, still a student at the Conservatoire then, was invited to fill the post of the viola group concertmaster of the Leningrad Philharmonic Society orchestra. Simultaneously he started teaching at the Conservatoire. From that time on performing and pedagogical arts were constantly present in his creative life and complemented each other. From 1956 through 1963 he was the viola group concertmaster in the famous Mravinsky Orchestra. In 1957 the young musician won two important and convincing prizes at the All-Union and International competitions in Moscow. Being a brilliant soloist, having performed with best national orchestras and conductors (Ye. Mravinsky, N. Rakhlin, A. Yansons, K. Eliasberg), Kramarov nonetheless was always drawn towards chamber music. Such leading figures of the Russian performing arts as I. Braudo, M. Vaiman, B. Gutnikov, V. Liberman, M.Rostropovich played together with Kramarov. The musician performed with great enthusiasm in the quartets named after Taneev, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Glazunov.

Mozart wrote a plethera of fine chamber music in the galante style of the classical era: Quintets for various instruments, string quartets, string trios, string duos, piano trios, violin sonatas and the two magnificent piano quartets here. With these two quartets, Mozart more-or-less invented the genre which was later taken up by Schumann, Brahms and Dvorak. These piano quartets show Mozart in both a dramatic mode in the minor work and a typical merry mood in the major piece.

Renowned early music pioneer Sigiswald Kuijken and his Piano Quartet approach Mozart's Piano Quartets K. 478 and K. 493 on this release for Challenge Records. A significant figure in the creation of this genre, Mozart was prompted to write these quartets by a commission from the publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister, who subsequently declared that K. 478 was too difficult for the amateur market. This performance of the quartets is truly a family affair with Kuijken joined by his daughters Sara and Veronica, along with cellist Michel Boulanger.
