The record has an interestingly stately air to it, considering Polly Eltes' breathy, quirky vocals and Michael Karoli's apparent fascination with variations on reggae rhythms (not too surprising, considering the spiritual link between Can and the output of Jamaican mixers.) The complete set would be more compelling and striking, though, if there were a little more focus – Karoli and Eltes spend quite a bit of time simply drifting into thematic hooks, leaving the listener in limbo for too long on a regular basis. When it clicks, though, it is excellent.

Four-CD, 64-song collection drawn principally from Doc's Vanguard releases of the 1960s and early 1970s (tapped his solo LPs and performances at the 1963 and 1964 Newport Folk Festival). This was Doc's best period recording-wise, and certainly you couldn't hope for a better document of his virtuosity, as the guitarist covers all manner of American folk and blues styles over the course of the set. It's too much, however, for listeners who aren't big fans; Vanguard's Essential Doc Watson is a more economical survey. If you are a big fan, though, you'll be especially interested in the 16 previously unreleased performances. Comprising the whole of disc four, these are mostly taken from live duets with Merle Travis or Doc's son, Merle Watson.

More a Legend Than a Band Review by Stewart Mason
In any other circumstance, that title would be hyperbole, but in the case of the Flatlanders, it's the simple truth. Although their only commercial release during their nearly four-year existence was an eight track on the tacky Plantation label, bandleaders Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock went on to become pioneers in alternative country, directly influencing bands ranging from Uncle Tupelo to Ely disciples the Clash. This 1990 reissue gives that eight track a proper digital release for the first time ever (minus two weaker tracks, covers of the country standards "Hello Stranger" and "Waiting for a Train"), plus four previously unreleased tracks recorded during the same March 1972 sessions.

Released to coincide with the duo's 2003 reunion tour, this two-disc anthology is no less than the fifth multi-disc compilation of the duo to appear in the CD era. Viewed coldly, it's a mercenary exercise, squeezing yet more juice out of one of the most valuable catalogs in the business…

This 2 CD box set is packed with some pretty rare blues sides, most from the 1950's era, with the rest from the 60's. This set focuses mainly on 45 RPM singles pressed on small labels because they're so powerful and exciting sounding, as opposed to a full LP. A number of these performers did record albums but focusing on singles strips the music down to the essential blues. This is the down and dirty sounding electric blues from mostly lesser/unknown singer/guitarists balanced by tracks from a few well known performers as well.. Among the better known perfromers are Juke Boy Bonner, Lafayette "Thing" Thomas, Guitar Shorty, Ike Turner, Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, Earl Hooker, and Homesick James.

Is this a comedy album laced with jazz or a jazz album laced with comedy? Good solid players (including Noel Jewkes,a Bay Area jazz icon) and Buzz's diverse vocal chops deliver parody, satire, wordplay, and a few just plain funny songs. Enjoy! Buzz is a kind of a wacky dude who believes that "He who dies having laughed the most, wins." Bob Brooks acquired the nickname "Buzz" when, in his first band, circa 1967, he developed a reputation as a type-A, high-energy sort of fellow.

UK three CD set. While the likes of Rubber Soul, 'See My Friends' and 'Still I'm Sad' had served notice in 1965 of British pop's heightened level of ambition, 1966 would prove to be an even more tumultuous twelve-month period as experimentation and innovation grew to new levels. The release that August of Revolver brought the concept of psychedelic music out of the margins and into the mainstream. However, psychedelia had been percolating throughout the year. The word was already in subterranean use in America, adapted by the likes of The 13th Floor Elevators and Hollywood hustler Kim Fowley, who in late 1965 had become the first person to promote a record with the term "psychedelic". Featuring 84 tracks, A Slight Disturbance In My Mind: The British Proto-Psychedelic Sounds Of 1966 examines the experimental pop element of the British music scene during that epochal twelve-month period with a dizzying, dazzling mix of nascent psychedelia, introspective pop and what's been retrospectively labelled freakbeat. We feature vital contributions from some of the era's biggest names (The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Hollies, The Animals etc), a bunch of highly collectable cult classics, a huge stash of unissued-at-the-time nuggets and early outings for such future legends as Bowie, Bolan, Slade and The Bee Gees. Housed in a clamshell box containing a 52-page booklet crammed with biographical information and priceless period photos and memorabilia, A Slight Disturbance In My Mind is a glorious snapshot of British pop storming the gates of a new, strange and wonderful dawn.

The Top 100 '60s Rock Albums represent the moment when popular music came of age. In the earliest part of the decade, bands were still regularly referencing earlier sounds and themes. By the middle, something powerful and distinct was happening, which is why the latter part of the '60s weighs so heavily on our list. A number of bands evolved alongside fast-emerging trends of blues rock, folk rock, psychedelia and hard rock, adding new complexities to the music even as the songs themselves became more topical. If there's a thread running through the Top 100 '60s Rock Albums and this period of intense change, it has to do with the forward-thinking artists who managed to echo and, in some cases, advance the zeitgeist. Along the way, legends were made.
