Guitarist Joe Pass was known for his forthright, straight-ahead style, gorgeous tone, and melodic concepts. This magnificent five-CD set collects his entire output in 1963 and 1964 as a leader, with additional sessions in which Pass plays in a trio led by Les McCann. Most of the tracks feature a quartet (the five exceptions adding the saxophone or flute of Bill Perkins), with the guitarist virtually always a key voice.

Limited to 5000 copies. Paper sleeve. PURE DYNAMITE! LIVE AT THE ROYAL was released in 1964 as KING K-883 with a gatefold cover that included photos and a biography. It reached #10 on the Billboard album charts. When Polydor reissued it they kept the "883" code number. In England it was released on the Stateside label. Most of the album was recorded live except for "Oh Baby Don't You Weep," which was originally a two-part single, here it's the whole take with overdubbed applause. All of the material performed here charted except for "I'm Tired But I'm Clean" a comedy routine featuring Bobby Bennett. The original release info and chart positions follow the song titles. The sound quality is what you expect for a live recording by a regional label in 1963, but it's not bad if you crank it up.

Pianist Ramsey Lewis and his trio released this live album in 1964, recorded at the Bohemia Caverns in Washington, D.C. Lewis offers up the accessible, swinging jazz-pop for which he was known. The program includes bossa nova ("People"), ballads ("Fly Me to the Moon"), and a medley of songs from WEST SIDE STORY. This stylistic variety is capably handled by the sympathetic rhythm section and Lewis, whose classical training shines through, yet never impedes his ability to swing.

The Wildlife was formed by Mansfield musician Terry Van Auker, who had been in a band called the Collegiates. The original band included Terry on lead guitar, John Kinkle on rhythm guitar, Bob Ross on bass, Charlie Barker on durms, and Lou Basso as lead singer. After about 4-5 weeks John left for college and Tom Zinser, from Tommy Z and the Sleepers replaced him. In late '66 or early '67 a producer for Columbia, John Walsh, got a tip and came out to hear the band perform at Greter's Lake in Mansfield.
