In early 1990, when it came time for the Holly Cole Trio to record a full album, they wanted to preserve the essence of their live performance by recording very close to the live environment they had come to dominate in Toronto's alternative club scene. Recording live off the stage in an empty theatre, the band was strategically placed around a single Calrec Ambisonic microphone and all the songs here are full takes with no overdubs. Girl Talk has since become a demonstration reference album, a true audiophile gem.

The surreal illustration that covers this Daptone offering vaguely recalls those of Philadelphia International releases by Billy Paul, Monk Montgomery, and MFSB. Among the Olympians' late-'60s/early-'70s inspirations must be the musicians behind those recordings, as well as the crews who contributed to the sessions guided by supreme chamber-soul architects Charles Stepney and Norman Whitfield…

Trombonist Steve Turre obviously put a lot of work into this CD for each of the nine selections has its own purpose and the personnel changes on every cut. Turre doubles on the conch shells and on a few numbers utilizes a "shell choir"; in addition there are often three percussionists, other notable trombonists (including Britt Woodman, Frank Lacy and Robin Eubanks) and such guest soloists as trumpeter Jon Faddis, tenor-saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and pianist Herbie Hancock. With highlights including "Funky-T," Yusef Lateef's "Morning," "Since I Fell for You" (a Woodman feature) and "All Blues," this is a particularly memorable and well-conceived set, one of Turre's best. ~ AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow
