On July 16, 1999, the 10th anniversary of the death of Herbert von Karajan, the Berlin Philharmonic paid tribute to their late maestro, playing within the confines of the imposing Salzburg Cathedral in von Karajans hometown of Salzburg. Among other works, the orchestra performed Mozart's Requiem in D minor, KV 626, featuring soprano Karita Mattila, contralto Sara Mingardo, tenor Michael Schade and bass baritone Bryn Terfel as soloists. Soprano Rachel Harnisch appeared as soloist on the two complementing arias Betrachte dies mein Herz und frage mich and Laudate Dominum.

The Berlin Philharmonic is consistently ranked as one of the greatest orchestras in the world. As is fitting such an eminent orchestra, they consistently work with the world's most renowned conductors and soloists, and this collection shows these great musicians coming together in eight classic recordings. Featuring conductors such as Abbado, Barenboim, Jansons, Karajan, and Wan, this box set also brings together a star-studded host of guest soloists, with pianists Glenn Gould and Arcadi Volodos, bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, violinist Midori Gotō, and more.

"…DG's new recording is magnificently balanced, creating a darkly glittering tapestry of sound and Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic could hardly be more acute or sympathetic partners. Those interested primarily in the Second Concerto should certainly winkle this disc out from a dauntingly long list of alternatives." ~Grammophone

The sad thing about this 2008 Deutsche Grammophon disc is not the music, which is unfailingly bright and cheerful, nor the program, which is consistently surprising and delightful, nor the performances, which are unendingly smiling and life-affirming. The sad thing about this disc compiled and conducted by Claudio Abbado called Marce & Danze (Marches and Dances) is that the Italian maestro is no longer performing or recording as nearly much he used to owing to the swift decline of his health.

The Claudio Abbado recording of the Dvorak New World Symphony has managed to secure itself a place among the top digital versions of this much-recorded work, alongside the Dresden performance of James Levine, also on DG. Taken from live performances in 1997, it shows every sign of spontaniety without any loss of dramatic bite or xxcitement. Abbado makes full use of his theatrical background to bring about this effect both in the symphony and in the welcome, perfectly-chosen fill-up, and elicits peerless and attentively-detailed playing from the Berliners.

This recording was made in 1992-93, but remastered in 2004 with glorius sound. Abbado is to me one of the best conductors in the world, and he leads the Berlin Philharmonic in fine fashion here. The Symphony No. 25 in G minor was in many ways a turning point for Mozart, and not only because it was his first Symphony composed in the minor key. The opening movement, very recognizable by everyone who has seen the movie "Amadeus" (it was played in the beginning of the movie), shows a remarkable impassioned forward momentum, but with a background of dark pessimism. The key of G minor lends itself to that 'struggle', and almost 15 years later he very effectively uses that very same key in the famous Symphony No.40, one of the final trio of Symphonies penned in a remarkable six week period in the summer of 1788.

On this fantastic, critically acclaimed recording of Beethovens’ greatest masterpiece, Claudio Abbado leads the Berlin Philharmonic through a performance of such nuance, such tumultuous emotion, that it’s difficult to imagine there’s a better way to hear this massively influential piece of music. Abbado is widely considered to be one of the most virtuosic and important conductors of the 20th and 21st centuries: in addition to winning two Grammy Awards, he holds four honorary doctorates, the Imperial Prize of Japan, and the French Legion of Honour among many other honors. Add that to one of the world’s premiere orchestras performing one of the most important compositions of all time, and a stunning high resolution audio recording, and you have an absolutely essential addition to your music collection.
