Giovanni Batista Pescetti (1704-1766) was born in Venice into a musical family, both his father and grandfather were musicians. He studied with Antonio Lotti and Adolph Hasse, the Saxon who was composer in Venice. In 1734 he settled in London (like many of his compatriots), where he was director of both Covent Garden and the King`s Theatre.Although Pescetti wrote many operas he is mainly remembered for his works for the keyboard, notably the harpsichord, for which he wrote several volumes of sonatas. They are charming, with a strong emphasis on the melody, expertly written for the keyboard, and popular with both professionals and amateurs. This new recording presents the complete keyboard works by Pescetti, for both harpsichord and organ. Played with infective zest and lyrical poise by Paolo Bottini. The historical organ in the Basilica di Giorgio Maggiore in Venice dates from 1750.

This recording gathers, for the first time[1], the complete original compositions for the organ by Giacomo Puccini (Lucca, December 22, 1858 – Brussels, November 29, 1924), collected and published in 2017 under the guidance of Virgilio Bernardoni in volume II/2.1 of the National Edition of Giacomo Puccini’s Works (Carus-Verlag 56.003).
It is thanks to the musicological efforts of the Giacomo Puccini Study Center in Lucca that, between 2015 and 2017, many of these compositions for the organ resurfaced. They had been scattered across various collections. Altogether, there are 57 pieces composed between 1870 and 1880, during the period when the young music student served as an organist in Lucca and neighboring towns.

The first recording of the complete organ works by Valeri. Gaetano Valeri (1760-1822) was born in Padua, Italy, bred and raised in the “Keyboard School of the Veneto region”. A true “classical” composer he absorbed the style of Haydn and Mozart, while still under the influence of the Galant Style of Galuppi, Alberti and Turini. Valeri’s organ works contain indications of the use of certain stops, which were specific of the organs built in his time in the Veneto, by for instance the famous organ builder Callido. Valeri’s organ works form a happy mix of the Classical and Galant, strict forms containing beautiful cantabile melodies and lavish ornamentation. Italian organist Paolo Bottini chose two beautiful historic organs from Valeri’s time, the full specification of which are included in the booklet, which also contains scholarly written liner notes by the artist.
