Advances in Machine

As the 4th Industrial Revolution is restructuring human societal organization into, so-called, “Society 5.0”, the field of Machine Learning (and its sub-field of Deep Learning) and related technologies is growing continuously and rapidly, developing in both itself and towards applications in many other disciplines. Researchers worldwide aim at incorporating cognitive abilities into machines, such as learning and problem solving.

A large international conference on Advances in Machine Learning and Data Analysis was held in UC Berkeley, California, USA, October 22-24, 2008, under the auspices of the World Congress on Engineering and Computer Science (WCECS 2008).

This is the second volume of a large two-volume editorial project we wish to dedicate to the memory of the late Professor Ryszard S. Michalski who passed away in 2007. He was one of the fathers of machine learning, an exciting and relevant, both from the practical and theoretical points of view, area in modern computer science and information technology. His research career started in the mid-1960s in Poland, in the Institute of Automation, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Poland.

Machine learning and computational intelligence are currently among the hottest research directions and have been applied to various areas with many successes, such as fields of image processing, point cloud processing, and natural language processing. Researchers explore many intelligent algorithms which are characterized by computational adaptability, robustness, and high-level performance. These algorithms facilitate intelligent behavior in complex and dynamic environments and the development of technology that enables machines to think, behave, or act more humanely. This book, consisting of 10 articles written by research experts on topics of interest, reports on the latest research in machine learning and computational intelligence. Many novel and interesting methods are introduced, which we hope will provide guiding significance for the further development of machine learning and computational intelligence.

Machine learning and cybernetics play an important role in many modern electronic, computer and communications systems. Automated processing of information by these systems requires intelligent analysis of various types of data and optimal decision making. In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid expansion of research and development activities in machine learning and cybernetics. To provide opportunities for researchers in these areas to share their ideas and foster collaborations, the International Conference on Machines and Cybernetics (ICMLC) has been held annually since 2002. The conference series has achieved a great success in attracting a large number of paper submissions and participants and enabling fruitful exchanges among academic and industrial researchers and postgraduate students. In 2005, the conference (ICMLC 2005) received 2461 full paper submissions and the Program Committee selected 1050 of them for presentation. It is especially encouraging that the conference is attracting more and more international attention. This year, there are contributions from 21 countries and 211 universities worldwide. Out of the 1050 papers presented at the conference, we selected 114 papers to be published in this volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science.

The Volume of “Advances in Machine Learning and Data Science - Recent Achievements and Research Directives” constitutes the proceedings of First International Conference on Latest Advances in Machine Learning and Data Science (LAMDA 2017). The 37 regular papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 123 submissions.
