As a violinist since young, the author was trapped in the classical training and discipline that music has to be faithfully reproduced according to the composers' written score. Any variation is a sin. But Stephane's music teaches new meaning in violin player. Stephane, despite his age, was able to play the devilish and beautiful tunes in such speed and effortlessly. Stephane music is pure ease, joy, happiness and almost spritual. Stephane Grapelli recordings during the 90s, as well as the classical ones, are all the author's favourite. One of the author's most favorite LP is Stephane Grappelli plays Jerome Kern. The LP, GRP 1032, was released in 1987, when Stephane has already attended perfection both in terms of techniques and musical emotions. Jerome Kern's music was transformed into an immaculate beauty by Stephane.

This difficult to find recording is worth the search; it contains some of the finest recorded work of Al Haig's enigmatic career. Haig was an important figure in the early development of bebop piano and can be heard as a sideman on many seminal recordings from the 1940s, including Salt Peanuts and Hot House. His refined classical technique was relatively unique at the time, and he was admired as a superb accompanist. Between the mid-'50s and the early 1970s there is a curiously large gap in his recorded output evidently due to personal problems. In fact, Al Haig Today! appears to be his only release as a leader during the '60s.

One of the most prolific of Tin Pan Alley scribes, Jerome Kern is given the royal treatment here with 25 vintage interpretations by some of the finest singers in jazz and pop. The likes of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan may be missing (two stars from songbook competitors Verve), but Capitol more than makes up for it with golden takes from Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Judy Garland. Among the many other choice cuts on display, the disc features particularly fine sides by Dinah Washington ("Jim") and Nancy Wilson ("Dearly Beloved").

The legacy of composer Jerome Kern is celebrated on this hodgepodge release which collects together 16 performances of his songs by a variety of singers: Ella Fitzgerald, Arthur Prysock, Helen Merrill, Sarah Vaughan, Joe Williams, Jackie and Roy, Ernestine Anderson, Fred Astaire, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby and three by Margaret Whiting. None of the music is particularly rare and the emphasis overall is on straight versions of the lyrics and Kern's melodies. This release is more for the general listener than for any serious collector.
