From the time he was signed to Impulse in 1966, it was assumed that Albert Ayler's releases on that label would be motivated by an attempt at commercialism. While the music was toned down from his earlier ESP recordings, by no means did Ayler ever make commercial records. Much in the same way John Coltrane's later-period Impulse releases weren't commercial, Ayler simply took advantage of a larger record company's distribution, trying to expose the music to more people. Ayler's uncompromising musical freedom mixed with his catchy combination of nursery rhythms and brass band marches remained prominent on Love Cry. The interplay between the Ayler brothers also remained fiery as younger sibling Donald is heard playing trumpet for the last time on a recording with his brother…

Albert King kept threatening to retire during the last decade of his life, yet he continued spreading his blues-power sound to audiences of every persuasion around the globe right up until a massive heart attack killed him in Memphis on December 21, 1992. King did, however, stop making records, and this January 1984 recording, cut for Fantasy Records in Berkeley, California, was his very last album. Backed by his road rhythm section and legendary Phil Spector session saxophonist Steve Douglas, King kept one foot in the Mississippi Delta with a couple of Elmore James classics ("Dust My Broom," "The Sky Is Cryin'), and the other in contemporary material by such then-little-known writers as Doug MacLeod ("Your Bread Ain't Done") and Robert Cray ("Phone Booth"). Digitally remastered by George Horn (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley).

John Storgards's acclaimed series of Shostakovich symphonies continues with this recording of Symphony No. 13. The BBC Philharmonic is joined by the bass-baritone Albert Dohmen and the Estonian National Male Choir. The symphony, subtitled 'Babiy Yar', caused a great deal of tension and controversy in the lead-up to its premiere, in December 1962 - not because of the music, but the poetry.

Born in Prague in 1770, Anton Reicha moved to Bonn in 1785, where he played violin and flute in the court orchestra, along with Ludwig van Beethoven. The two, who were the same age, struck up a close friend- ship, and initially it seemed that Reicha was the more successful of the two, as already in 1787, he managed to get his first symphony and several smaller works performed in Bonn. By contrast, Beethoven worked on and abandoned a symphony in c minor during this time, and his two large-scale cantatas from 1790 do not seem to have been performed during his lifetime. Reicha, however, was also far more academically inclined and entered the University of Bonn in 1789, although possibly due to familial pressure, whereas Beethoven left for Vienna in 1792.
