Polish alto saxophone player Maciej Obara makes a striking ECM debut with "Unloved", an album whose expressive range embraces tender lyricism and impassioned, fiery, powerful playing. With the exception of the title track - written by Krzysztof Komeda (spiritus rector of modern jazz in Poland) for Janusz Nasfeter's film of the same name - themes are by the highly inventive alto saxophonist.

Martín Palmeri began to work on the Magnificat dedicated to mixed choir, soprano and mezzo-soprano solo, string orchestra, bandoneon, and piano in 2010. He was guided by an idea to create a piece, which would be stylistically and emotionally close to the Misa a Buenos Aires – Misatango, yet much more difficult for the performers, and more sophisticated as far as the rhythm and polyphony are concerned. The composition was ended in 2012 and its world premiere took place in Milan. The source of the text of the Magnificat is the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). The evangelist consciously combines three pictures into a triptych: Annunciation, Visitation, and the Marian Magnificat. The Humble Servant is chosen for the Mother of the Son of God.

With the exception of the title track - written by Krzysztof Komeda (spiritus rector of modern jazz in Poland) for Janusz Nasfeter's film of the same name - themes are by the highly inventive alto saxophonist. Obara emphasizes however that his themes "serve as outlines, from which our sound is set free. My friends are amazing improvisers. I love their ability to move around freely in open spaces, and the way they shape and give colour to what I have in mind.

Scandinavian improv trio the Thing (saxist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love) have released a string of albums and played hundreds of gigs worldwide in joyous defiance of the idea that raw noise and indifference to careful planning are inimical to music-making. Last year, alongside former pop singer and Brit award-winner Neneh Cherry, they created an inspired brew of experimental pop and sax-wailing ferocity, and though this studio set for the core band doesn't stray as close to familiar song-shapes, the Thing always suggest storylines and melody even at their most merciless – the result of orthodox-music experience deep enough to generate a rich deconstructivist palette.

Amgala Temple is the sound of three musical forces combined. The result is an overwhelming clash of spontaneity and control, improvisation and clairvoyance - all meshed together in a quest to make something radiant.
