Collider solders together The Thing, the drummer’s punk-jazz trio with Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten with its U.S. counterpoint, the DKV trio of reedist Ken Vandermark, bassist Kent Kessler and drummer Hamid Drake. Like a recurring guest star on a sit-com, Vandermark is a frequent Nilssen-Love collaborator. More notably Collider is an opportunity to compare the styles of the Norwegian and Drake, his American doppelganger, who seems to be behind every drum kit that Nilssen-Love isn’t.
Amgala Temple is the sound of three musical forces combined. The result is an overwhelming clash of spontaneity and control, improvisation and clairvoyance - all meshed together in a quest to make something radiant.
The trio of Scandinavian rhythm section Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) and Johan Berthling (double bass) hooking up with Japanese free jazz legend Akira Sakata (saxophone/clarinet) started in 2013 at the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway. The trio took their name from the legendary 1977 collaborative album by Yosuke Yamashita Trio and dance group Dairakudakan – an album that Sakata was a central part of, that even 40 years later stand solid as a radical and bold musical statement. And this piece of history gives us a clue to where the trio of Nilssen-Love, Berthling and Sakata is aiming for, not by looking back and rethreading what has been done before, but adopting its attitude of kicking the often stale sax/drums/bass-format forward with such force that it feels completely fresh.
In May of 2011, the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville celebrated saxophonist Peter Brötzmann's 70th birthday with two concerts, one solo, one with his Trio Roma featuring electric bassist Massimo Pupillo and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. Both are included in this double-disc set on Victo. Disc two includes the nearly 70-minute improvisation "Music Marries Room to Room," followed by the five-minute closer "The Turning Glory." As one would expect, these are scorched-earth musical powerhouses.
Amgala Temple is the sound of three musical forces combined. The result is an overwhelming clash of spontaneity and control, improvisation and clairvoyance - all meshed together in a quest to make something radiant. The mix of Lars Horntveth, Amund Maarud and Gard Nilssen is a wish come true for music fans, as they each have made great impact as bandleaders, solo artists and musicians in an array of projects - be it with Jaga Jazzist, Susanne Sundfør, Todd Terje, Morudes, Bushman’s Revenge, a-ha or Gard Nilssen’s Acoustic Unity. But Amgala Temple sounds little like the above. These musicians’ profound interest in old and new sounds, and their deep respect for each other, was essential in creating this space where they could create more freely - venturing into new sonic landscapes - letting whatever happens happen…
Something so special as this European project would need to have a future. After a first recording with the joined forces of British legendary saxophonist Evan Parker and the very special Scandinavian rhythm section of Sten Sandell (piano), Ingebrigt Haker Flaten (bass) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums), here is the double CD that confirms the superband status of the Townhouse Orchestra. Not an orchestra, in spite of the name, but a quartet, truth is it sometimes sound as such. The extensive techniques used by the performers multiply the possibilities of each instrument, opening up the perspectives of the music played.
