Quintet’s music is based on avant-garde and experimental jazz. Roots of 1960’s avant-garde jazz are gently combined with the newest tendencies and innovations of contemporary experimental music, funk, soft intonations of rock styles, modern jazz styles, cool, progressive, fusion and other contemporary jazz styles. This wide synthesis of styles helps musicians to create multi-colorful, universal and bright musical pattern. The musicians are main figures of international jazz scene – they had been improvising together with dozens of impressive and great jazz masters. Each of them is known as innovative improviser, who combines together expression, precise playing technique, emotional, suggestive and hot playing manner and sounds experiments. All together the musicians create bright, intense and evocative sound.

“Ethiobraz” documents the meeting of Paal Nilssen-Love’s Large Unit big band and Ethiopian dance/music ensemble Fendika at Molde Jazz Festival in 2018. Joining them as a special guest was guitarist Terrie Ex, a key component in getting making the meeting happen with his long involvement with the Ethiopian music scene. And, Paal Nilssen-Loves’s first travel to Ethiopia was with The Ex in December 2009. This changed his life. Paal’s first travel to Brazil was in June 2013. This also changed his life. Large Unit was established during fall of 2013. During numerous trips to both Ethiopia and Brazil, Paal established many contacts to schools, clubs, presenters, musicians and dancers in these two countries. The music he created for Large Unit was heavily informed by these trips and meetings, and fusing these influences together with the Scandinavian free music sensibility became an important factor in the Large Unit sound.

Who is Cornélie Falcon? Although the Falcon soprano, a rare vocal type, is well known today, its original model is much less so.

Paal was born in Molde, Norway, Dec 24. 1974, and raised at a jazz club in Stavanger, run by his parents. It was natural to choose his fathers drums as his instrument and jazz as his work. From 1990 on he took actively part in the jazz milieu in Stavanger and joined bands with established musicians such as trumpeter Didrik Ingvaldsen and saxophonist Frode Gjerstad. In many ways, these collaborations were essential as they pointed out the directions for Paal’s later musical development and career. During his studies at the Jazz dept at the University in Trondheim, where the first self initiated bands were established, things developed really fast – and Paal was nationally acknowledged at the age of 20.

Acoustic Unity, driven by the stick work of prolific Norwegian drummer Gard Nilssen along with his longtime compositional collaborator and saxophonist André Roligheten and Swedish bassist Petter Eldh, plays explorative post-bop originals that can lean into free jazz or up the tempos and grow agitated, before sliding into a wonderfully melodic slow mode.

In this recording Tina Margareta Nilssen presents three piano works, each with a wide spectrum of expression and intensity. Two of them belong to the standard repertoire, but the third, by Signe Lund, is a practically unknown work, a real gem recorded here for the very first time. The Piano Sonata in E minor is one of Edvard Grieg's most equilibristic and passionate works. Signe Lund's beautiful music guides the listener through Norwegian nature, turbulent stormy weather and the French salons. And in Beethoven's famous "Appassionata" sonata one can hear the struggles and suffering that ultimately led to his creation of a whole new era of music.
