It’s mid- to late-1975, what remained of Big Star is no longer, Third/Sister Lovers was sitting on a shelf and Alex Chilton was in Memphis at a very low point. Chris Bell spent a large part of the year in London trying to get a solo record deal, but turned up empty and flew home to visit family in late summer. While at home, Bell was cutting more solo tracks at Ardent, one of which, “You And Your Sister” needed a harmony vocal, so he called in Alex.

Newly discovered recordings of early solo Peter Holsapple and Like Flies On Sherbert–era Alex Chilton. It’s 1978 at Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis, TN. Peter Holsapple had rolled into town chasing the essence of Big Star. He hooked up with musician/engineer/friend-of-Big-Star, Richard Rosebrough after approaching, and being turned down by, Chris Bell who Holsapple had hoped might be interested in producing him. Together Richard and Peter started laying down tracks during the off hours at the studio.

Throughout his solo career, Alex Chilton was in the unenvious position of having to compete with his work in Big Star. Despite only putting out a few albums, Big Star, even decades later, is one of the most influential power pop bands to ever come out of the U.S. and all three of their official studio albums are undeniable classics. So, anyone having to follow that track record was bound to disappoint some. Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, Chilton managed to put out several decent records and a handful of great ones; A Man Called Destruction falls into the latter category.

By all rights, the album that came to be known as Big Star's Third should have been a disaster. It was written and recorded in 1975, when Alex Chilton's brilliant but tragically overlooked band had all but broken up. As Chilton pondered his next move, he was drinking and drugging at a furious pace while writing a handful of striking tunes that were often beautiful but also reflected his bitterness and frustration with his career (and the music business in general). Production of the album wasn't completed so much as it simply stopped, and none of the major figures involved ever decided on a proper sequence for the finished songs, or even a title. (The album was also known as Sister Lovers and Beale Street Green at various times.) And yet, Third has won a passionate and richly deserved cult following over the years, drawn in by the emotional roller coaster ride of the songs, informed by equal parts love, loss, rage, fear, hope, and defeat.

This is the expanded 'I Got Kinda Lost' unofficial Big Star box set. Previously this set contained four discs and was jam packed with all kinds of Big Star related tracks. Like the previous incarnations of 'I Got Kinda Lost', this expanded 2013 release attempts to tell the story chronologically of Big Star through their studio outtakes and alternate versions by keeping it more Big Star centric through the prism of Chris Bell and Alex Chilton - the architects of the band.

At the epicenter of New York’s most significant music scene was an instantly-forgotten record label: Ork Records, the first punk label and the original “indie.” For the first time ever, the monumental output of this explosive imprint’s 1975-1979 run is all in one place. Sixteen singles that birthed punk, no-wave, power pop, and the next four decades of indie rock, including the debut releases from Television, Richard Hell, Richard Lloyd, Cheetah Chrome, Alex Chilton, the dBs, and Chris Stamey, plus future nuggets by the Revelons, Student Teachers, Prix, Marbles, Idols, Mick Farren, and Link Cromwell, and previously unreleased singles from the Feelies and Erasers. This is a limited edition of 2000 carefully replicated 7” sleeves ensconced in a custom box modeled on period-specific Ork mailing labels.
